Been thinking of a new desktop for a while, just a few months a go I replaced my 3 year old Core 2 Duo laptop with a core i7 Skyfire laptop from PC specialist and a very good laptop it is too. The windows rating for the 2.2Ghz processor was higher (only by .1 but still higher) than my desktop that is a first gen core i7 running @ 2.8 Ghz

anyway to the point my desktop is 3 years old soon, was wondering if it would be worth upgrading to a new 3rd gen Core i7 (running at 3.5 Ghz) or if I should just wait out until the 4th gen to arrive.

i can just stick my graphics card from my current system in the new one (its a radeon 6950) to save money thinking of waiting until the Radeon 8xxx series before upgrading graphics again

Well, unless it's actually struggling to cope with the workload there is very little benefit of getting yourself the latest one. Also windows experience index generally fails in many cases. Plus since it's already 3 years old anyway you could try bumping up the clock a bit to improve the performance if really necessary.

There is no point upgrading unless it cannot cope with what you need it for, and if its for gaming, then you probably dont need to upgrade for a couple of years yet
