4070 Ti Super vs 4080

Hello,

I'm buying a PC for gaming. I plan to play modern games like Cyberpunk ideally in 4k in as high graphics settings as possible. My monitor is Dell-R41HX-Ultrasharp-U3219Q-Monitor.

I've selected a pre-built Pulsar Pro (https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Pulsar-Pro/), with the configuration posted below, and wanted to ask this group for advice whether the config is sufficient for 4k gaming, or whether it'd be worth upgrading to one of the RTX 4800 cards (RTX 4800, or RTX 4800 Super).

Thank you very much. Kind regards.

I definitely wouldn't opt for the build as it is, most would recommend AM5.... especially for gaming with the X3D chips in play.

For 4k I would personally want a 4080 Super to guarantee a good experience overall. With that being said I believe your monitor is 60Hz, if you have no plans to upgrade the 4070Ti Super more than has you covered.

If you have a look here this would cover what we would need to give you accurate advice:

Thank you Scott for such a quick reply.

Monitor - Dell-R41HX-Ultrasharp-U3219Q-Monitor, and do not plan to upgrade.
Uses - Gaming, no VR. I do a little bit of programming, and would like to test some of the open source LLMs model as well
Max Budget - around 2650£

So, you're recommending AMD-based processor, so what would be a good config? Would one of the pre-built with AMD processors like https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Gladius-R7/, or https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Creator-Ultra/ be a better choice?

I'd also strongly recommend you don't partition a single 2TB SSD into 2 drives, as you've still got a single point of failure that will result in you losing everything.

You really want a small-ish (say 500GB) very fast m.2 for your OS/Apps/Game Launchers, and another, not quite as fast, larger one (say 2TB) for your game installs.

Oh thanks a lot. I opted-in for two partition, as I wanted to install on another partition Linux system. Keep the main one for Windows+Gaming, and the second for programming on Linux

Below is where I would start. If you want some RGB you can get it in there no problem. The 4070Ti Super is more than enough for your monitor so you can save a few quid there.

I wouldn't get pre-built.

This one has 3 drives, one for Linux, one for Windows and the other for games & fast storage.

I couldn't select the X670e TUF as it's saying you cant have more than 2 M2 drives.... which is wrong. Will flag with PCS though.

Hope it’s ok to ask a question here.Consider a pcspecialist pc with the pcs aio logo on, anyone here know what type of brand the aio is?

About gpu i think 4070ti super will deliver good, just search 4070 ti super vs 4080 on YouTube and see the different fps tests :)

Really appreciate your help Scott, and TonyCarter. Thank you very much.
I've looked at i7-14700K vs 7800X3D gaming benchmarks, and basically with AMD setup I can get better gaming performance for lower price ,which I can just save, or use to upgrade GPU to 4080 (but as you suggested probably not needed).

There's a lot more benefit than just the gaming performance to consider. With the AM5 platform you have significantly less power requirements, far lower cooling requirements and there is an upgrade path down the line should you wish to upgrade the CPU to the 9800X3D or whatever iteration is out at the time. The 14700K uses a ton of power, puts out a ridiculous amount of heat when at full chat and is DOA as the socket it plugs into is end of life.

Intel really don't make much sense just now, unless for very specific use cases.

Thank you Scott for your help, you're awesome.
I ended up ordering what you recommended, but upgraded the GPU to 4080 super. I'll consider replacing/getting an extra monitor in few months. Changed the case to the one that looked to me more appealing.

I don't know if you meant to select 2 512GB drives or not?

The 4080 Super is a monster card, it's really over-powered for your monitor so I would definitely look to upgrade the monitor as soon as you can to actually get any benefit. If you pocketed the cash now it could be put towards an upgrade of GPU down the line, future proof isn't a thing unfortunately. Keep in mind that to get the most out of that card you're looking at a monitor in the region of £600.

I can only stress that the money is better in your pocket with the circumstances right now, but it's your cash :)

Additionally, if you want a bit more bling the RGB RAM might be worth an add to go with the cooler and case.

Yes, 2 x 512 GB -> one for Windows+Apps, one for Linux+programming stuff, and one 2TB for Games/data etc.

Thanks, yeah, will look into upgrade of the monitor soon.

RGB Ram do you mean, e.g. this:
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB)?

Ideal then, I completely forgot about the Linux drive haha. It was me that recommended it

Yeah, that's the one. Shiny shiny!

Thanks. Another question I've got is about cooling. Are extra case fans needed/would be useful, or are the selected CORSAIR iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX XT RGB High Performance CPU Cooler, and fans in the case COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 V2 MESH ARGB GAMING CASE
more than enough?

Scott

No case fans required. You have the front 3 for intake, the AIO will be set up for exhaust and there's also a rear fan for exhaust. This is the ideal layout as you have 3 in and 3 out. The 3 in will be constant, the 2 on the AIO will vary so will lead to positive case pressure during low use (good) and equal to slight vacuum during heavy use (good).

The airflow is more for the GPU as the CPU will be more than handled by the H100i.

Thank you for the context Scott, really appreciate that.

Ok, final question. I'm considering upgrading RAM from 32GBs to 64GBs, so I can leverage the GPU for inferencing LLMs without RAM being a bottleneck (64GBs is a recommendation: https://github.com/randaller/llama-chat)

When updating the RAM spec, from:
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) -> 64Gb Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB), I can't do the change since "The Memory you have selected is not currently compatible with ASUS motherboards, please amend to a Gigabyte motherboard or change the memory."

I can switch though from:
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) -> 64Gb Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 5600MHz (2 x 32GB) AMD, [(or 4x16GB) no AMD suffix] without complaints from the system.

Is this switch a safe to do from the motherboard compatibility? Am I missing something? Or If I wanna switch to 64GBs of RAM should I also consider switching a motherboard?

Gigabyte are a bit of an unknown for me at the moment. They had fallen away in recent years but their AM5 boards seem to be pretty good. Both options are there for you.

I would personally want 6000Mhz of RAM in the system for your uses. My guess is that PCS haven't got a consistent pass rate for 2x32GB at 6000Mhz on Asus (it's simple enough with tweaks but it needs to be consistent for them to arrange it, EXPO is the main issue I believe).

4x16GB is a no-go for me, especially with gaming. You need to know how to adjust the timings of the RAM to get the full throughput again, otherwise performance tanks.
