5950X @ 97 Degrees

Hey everyone,

I just bought a desktop PC from PCSpecialist and since I got it that it's been acting a bit odd. Runs great but at times it just restarts by itself. This happens pretty much every time I use the computer but it seems to only happen when I'm in the desktop with no apps/games running which makes it odd.

I ended up downloading HWiNFO64 to check the temperatures and noticed CPU temps really high but I'm unsure of how to read them and if it's normal or not. Is this normal?

When running graphically intense games I don't see the CPU temps above 80ish degrees and GPU temperatures are always in the 60's below. UPDATE: Actually CPU temperates are at 89 degrees at 15-20% load. This doesn't seem right...

I did a RAM test and all sticks checked out without any errors. Also disabled automatic reboots from windows after some googling and the PC still reboots randomly.

The reboots and the CPU temps seems a bit off. I am not sure if the random reboots are CPU temp related or not. I also don't run any start up softwares besides Steam that could be causing it.

What could be causing these reboots if RAM passed the memtest86?

See specs and cooling placement below:
PSU: CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES
GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 3090
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
RAM: 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3600MHz (4 x 8GB)
Cooler: Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM
Extra Fans: 3x Corsair LL120 RGB LED Fan
Case: LIAN LI LANCOOL II MESH

Thanks in advance

Best regards,

Andre

Have you tried running it with just two RAM sticks in, there have been issues with AMD and four RAM sticks.

Not sure whether it has been solved yet but there are other threads on the forum about it.

There was a thread where lowering the clock speeds on the RAM stabilised it too.
Worth checking it out if you need to hold onto 32GB.

Are you able to post the full specs from your order? Do you get temp spikes leading up to the restarts
HWMonitor is often recommended but im not sure if that gains you much over HWInfo (perhaps more reliable?)

Haven't tried 2 sticks of RAM yet, can give that a try. However my biggest concern is the CPU temps running 90 degrees at 15-20% load when running a game like RDR2 for example. This can't be right can it?

I used iCue to turn the fan speed to a fixed 100% on the H115i and temperatures are not 82-84. There's nothing blocking the airflow in the case and room temperature is 20 degrees. I don't get it. How can the 5950x run so hot at 15% load?

Did you buy arctic thermal paste?
Posting your full specs is going to help, you can access it through your account page/orders and use the post to forum function

The CPU temperatures are alarming to say the least but I don't think they are related to the restarts. Restarts happen out of the blue usually when idle, never under load.

Corsair coolers come with pre-applied paste, equal (possibly better) quality already.
To do the thermal it would of been repasted, and paste jobs are not a 100% accuracy thing, theres an element of pot luck.

You're probably right, seems it could be the paste job.

The venting is
x2 fans at the bottom blowing air in
2x at the top blowing air out
2x at the front blowing air in through the radiator which is placed at the front
1x at the back blowingt air out
GPU is blowing air up as well , not at the radiator

After some research this setup was recommended and I was more focused on the GPU temperatures to be honest. I'll try to reaplly the thermal paste, could solve the problem. Thanks for the suggestion by the way

That was pretty quick!
I would still watch the temps for a while, and the possible RAM issue. You mentioned it restarts when more or less idle?

Yes it does that sometimes, only when in idle (so far) might be worth trying lowering the clocks as the sticks themselves are in good shape. It's funny. The idle reboots were odd, the constant crashes in Red Dead Redemption 2 made me think something was wrong and got me looking, found out the CPU temperatures were off the charts and in the end, I think all 3 things are unrelated.

Not sure about the reboots but they only happen when they don't disrupt anything. RDR2 is just a mess of a PC port, all other games/apps run fine and the high CPU temps was a thermal paste issue.

Temps are great now, CPU is always below the GPU temperature around the 50-65 degrees under load, which is to be expected from the way the airflow is configured.

The H115i bracket wasn't fully screwed in so I suspect the lack of pressure kind of broke the thermal paste seal between the cooler and CPU making temperatures go haywire.

Thanks a lot for the help, you saved a chip today
