AMD Bulldozer a poor gaming cpu?

I heard the AMD Bulldozer FX4100 wasn't a great cpu for gaming.

Is it worth me paying an extra £100 on an Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-3470 (3.2GHz) 6MB Cache + ASUS® P8Z77-M: MICRO-ATX, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX

Or should I save the £100 and go for the AMD BULLDOZER QUAD CORE FX-4100 (3.60GHz/4MB CACHE/AM3+) + ASUS® M5A78L-M/USB3: M-ATX, USB 3.0, SATA 3.0Gb/s.

Thanks.

If you have a small budget I'd get the FX-4170 with a good graphics card. Intel has a better processor but for gaming the most important part is the graphics card and a 4 core processor is good enough.

The FX4100 is perfectly fine for gaming. There could be one or two CPU intensive games it might struggle a bit with on highest settings, but very few.

they are in different leagues price wise, of course you are going to get better performance from the i5 but the intel equivalent to the 4100 price wise is a dual core i3 which would struggle a lot more than the FX4100

If it means anything to you, I have the FX-8150 which is technically 2 4100s put together, and I barely go over 50% overall usage even when gaming on the most intense games, although I havent looked on CPU intense games like Total War, i imagine itd be a lot more

total war shogun 2 - fall of the samurai, on max everything, pushes my rig flipping hard! can get 60fps, but as soon as the fights start and ya zoom in close watching the individual units/soldiers fighting am looking just over 30fps! Great looking game, but it does push my system very hard! harder than bf3 and metro 2033

Next time I play, I will check out my cpu usage.

Ok here is the build I plan to buy today. Can anyone have a quick look and tell me if there are any shortcomings or if I have overspent on this system, considering I will be playing WoW, BF3, Shogun 2 and Skyrim on hopefully high to ultra settings with smooth framerates.

Thanks.

Do you need a fan controller? The onboard sound will be good enough as well. Since you are selecting speakers I assume you are not using the in-built speakers from the monitor, you'll need a DVI cable that comes with the monitor you selected so you may not need the HDMI cable.

Ok I can drop the fc and save 20 on the sound card. I could go upto 1100, perhaps 1150 but that really would be it.

I'd go with the spec below, it has a better graphics card and the possibility of adding a 2nd HD 7870 in the future, if needed, to improve performance. The HD 7870 should easily max all the games you mentioned on high settings. If you want to stay below £1100 you could go back to the HD 7850.

Right that's lovely. Is it worth me going for 3gb RADEON HD7950 for an extra £31 an eating nothing but value beans on toast for a month :)
