Morrowind is excellent with the Unofficial patches and a couple of mods that suit your taste. If Skyrim has similar Moddability it will become something no self-respecting RPG fan can give a miss.
The FF series can't be considered among the best of all time. Sure, the story / emotional response and cut scenes are always of superb quality, but the game play is extremely generic. Combat in FF really grew old over 15 years ago.
