BIOS will not detect SSD

Hi!

I very recently bought a Mini PC from PCS - a nice silent one with a Kingston SSD as well. However, nothing seems to be picking up that the SSD exists. Obviously the first thought is "is it plugged in?", however checking the connections and reconnecting them didn't seem to help.

I don't really want to have to take the entire thing apart to try change the SATA connection at the motherboard (as some online help threads have suggested), so what can any of you suggest?

what vanthus said,

1 - When you try and turn on the system, do you get a black screen with a flashing underscore? (I think its known as the boot device cursor)

2 - Can you see any warning lights on the motherboard? or audio beeps? these correspond with certain problems, which you can find out in the mobo manual.

If 1, then I think the SSD has died, 2, would just help diagnose the problem, in which you could pass the info onto PCS when you call.

If the drive isn't showing in bios and you've checked connections, probably best give tech support a call.

Thanks, I'll try ringing them tomorrow. I might add, I didn't check the connections at the motherboard as it was far too awkward to get at. I only checked the ones straight into the ssd.

I get a "no boot device found " error. Kinda expected seen as I only just got it and was trying to install Linux on it. So there was no OS on it anyway. No audio bleeps, just a green light that I assume means a- okay.

if you dont have an OS installed, that would probably be why.

You may have to go into the bios, then change the boot priority to boot from whatever it is you are planning to run linux of.

But that's the thing. I load Linux off a CD and Linux can't detect the SSD. I tried Win 7, but that couldn't find it either. BIOS doesn't list it in it's hardware at all so there's no boot order for me to change.

ah right, yeah of course. My bad.

I could only suggest that the ssd has failed (or is not connected/powered up)

Check the connections, maybe use a different sata cable.. then try a different power connection from the PSU.

Just for some closure on this issue, I phoned up PCS and they said they'd take back the computer and have a look at it. I guess that's that for now.
