I would suggest spending less on peripherals and making improvements to the base unit.

For example, this is about the minimum I would recommend for a high end gaming rig:

That looks abit beefier but is AMD the way to go on CPU and what's the compatability like with an Nvid card?
Also I need some peripherals and monitor in the build as the computer I was using died to the point where my Micro tech couldn't fix it and would cost more to repair than buy a new one.. so currently I'm using a friends computer until my new one is on order and have no surviving peripherals as my old computer was actual a laptop -.-" and the nice monitor I managed to procure from my old rig doesn't actually have a power supply anymore I'm a bit stumped :\

And any ideas within budget range on the periph's, would a 120hz be better for the flicker refresh gaming wise even though it's a 3D screen without the card?
Also would anybody like to give me some quick info on the mouse/keyboard please? I used to own a 518 and it was pretty sick and lasted longer than anything I've used before but silly little things like the sheen on the top would start to wear within a few months of intense gaming sesh's ;] I'm sure you know what it's like.. any info would be appretiated as always!

As far as the AMD / Intel compatibility there are no issues. You can mix and match as you please

I think what Tom DWC was trying to say was to spend less on the peripherals
You have spent £345 on peripherals (Monitor, Mouse, keyboard and webcam)
Which is around a third of your budget
Youd be much better off spending more money on the PC and less on peripherals

Also the bigfoot killer is really not worth the money in my view.

So basically Tom DWC's suggested spec with £250 to spend on peripherals would leave you with a much better PC

Ah I see appologies then didn't mean for it to sound offending :p
Yeah I read the review on the Killer and it looks a little pointless to be honest I'll try setting up a new spec tommorow evening with less money on peripherals and see what you guys think, thanks for the input :] Night all x

As you are doing a Microsoft networking degree I will save you the cost of the Killer Bigfoot card and tell you what you need to do to achieve the same result for free :)

The Bigfoot card basically identifies gaming data packets and prioritizes them, it also increases the frequency of TCP packet acknowledgments by windows.

This can actually be done with some easy registry edits.
Alternatively just use a C++ script to do it for you. One can be found here:

Thankyou Picard that's something I was looking at doing and you've just made it 10x easier :p
Also here is a spec I just laid out what does everyone think to the changes and to the earlier questions? And I'll probably ask some more because I'd rather have too much input than not enough if I'm going to spend a grand on a computer to last me.. children are not exactly free either so I would rather not have to spend more money on it in the near future that could go towards them ^^

The words "high-end gaming" and "HD5450" worry me.... I'd really listen to the advice given by other members with regards to your budget. Spend more on the PC and less on peripherals, you can always get a new mouse/keyboard when you have spare ££. If you're PC can't play the latest games in 12 months time because you spent money on a gaming keyboard & mouse, you're not going to be a happy bunny!

- Dropped the Soundcard & Firewire Card as the Motherboard already has very good onboard alternatives.

This PC spec would perform much better in the apps/games you will use the PC for. If you really want the gaming keyboard & mouse then stick around £100 onto the budget.

Meds spec is sound and I would second it.

He has managed to drop components to increase others. Some typical examples would be.

Dropping the 4X Blu-Ray and seperate DVD Writer and upgraded to a single 12x Blu-Ray that includes 16x DVDR, This works out cheaper than the 2 standard drives.
Also the sound card is not important as the onboard sound is very capable nowadays so saved you another £30+

I will also back the more PC grunt less bling on the peripherals. Keyboards and Mice can get very expensive and is best to get when found on sale or a couple of months down the line when you have the extra cash.
The Mouse/Keyboard Meds has given you is very capable and sturdy design so wil last you long enough to save for those all important shiny keyboards that can make the tea.

Haha Ok I see your points but that was an advised spec by PcSpec on the phonelines! + peripheral tweaks ^^ So I'll dumb down the periphs but can I ask what the corsair 650 PSU is for? Will the 600 do the same job for 20 quid less?
And also do I need a HD cable or does one come with the monitor :]
