I'm due to have my computer collected to be repaired, but I do not have the original packaging in which it came in. How much packing and protection will be needed for DSL delivery and are there any other precautions which I should take?
Yes, you need to package it as best as you possibly can. If you can believe it we get computers returned to us in black bin liners, and then the customer throws a fit when we call to say its smashed.
It needs to be wrapped in protective bubble wrap (many layers). Then placed in a big sturdy box with lots and lots of screwed up newspaper to act as a buffer. You can also put bubblewrap or screwed up newspaper inside the pc to help prevent the components coming loose if there are any drops etc. Remember it is only insured if sent back in the original packaging. If you package it yourself and it gets damaged in transit, and the packaging is deemed insufficient given the value and type of product, then you will be liable for the costs of any damage.
That being said, we can supply original packaging and only charge for the cost of sending it to you (£15).
It should be perfectly fine to remain in the PC, though if you have any sensitive data on there, you might want to move it elsewhere just as a precaution
In fact leaving the hard drive will probably make it easier for PCS to test whatever it is with the machine that needs checking/changing (note: this is pure speculation on my part)
it should be fine to remain in the computer. if its one of those tooless drives like the coolermaster ones, you may want to use 1 or 2 cable ties an tie them in, incase of rough transit as those dhl or yodel chaps knows no sheer mercy when handling a box especially ones that clearly states in big bold red letters all over the box to be handled with extreme care. just so they dont unclip from the bay from a rough transit like a couple of people here on the forum including myself.
this is what i mean:
you may also want to backup your stuff incase and in unexpecting times, pcs may require to format it.
