Confusing PSU information

Hi

When changing the spec of my order, the PCS configurator recommended that I needed only 650W. This seemed a little low to me, so I went with a 750W (just in case I needed a bit more).

I am now in building, and have a red notice saying that I need 829W and need to upgrade.

Which is correct? The configurator or the build warning? I still have a little time to correct before they send it out.

Just re-run the configurator. The message it comes up with is:

You have selected a 750W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 650W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around of 564W power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is over charge you!

Ignore what the configurator says, you never spec to what the PC requires, rather what it may require in the future.

You want an 850W as a minimum.

Annoyingly, the 850RMx is not available. So I have gone back to the 1000RMx ... which is on pre-order. So I am going back into a queue.
Actually, this is quite helpful as I am considering to upgrade the 3070 to the 3080 next year, and I would probably have to upgrade the power supply then anyway. Doing it now costs me £50 but PCS does the installation. So good outcome.

Thanks for your help. Good to catch it now rather than later.

I believe it is to do with originally low balling the power requirements of the 30 series cards but don’t quote me on it

Edit: like spyder said you always want a more powerful PSU than what is required to ensure that you can upgrade it in the future

But the higher number that appears in the amendment doesn't correspond to the GPU...the recommended minimum from NVIDIA for the 3070 was, I believe, 650w...and they used a high-end Intel i9 chip to come to that figure so an AMD chip will require less. I just think something has been programmed wrong when it comes to amendments
That was only with the founders though. With most aftermarket cards that apply even a slight overclock, you need a step up on the PSU side.

The founders 3080 is recommended 750w on nvidia's site, but almost every aftermarket card recommends 850w.

But ignoring that, yes, there's obviously something amiss with the configurator, we'll need to report that.

I thought it had been reported previously? I remember someone posting about it a few months ago....maybe they have been so busy that it has just got overlooked
Oh really? I might just forward an email anyway, just in case it's been overlooked.
