crash on loading game client

So, while my new machine is wonderful, I did some downloading, and this is what is happening (doesn't seem to be happening with any other programs, have to try other games when I install them).

I try to open the GW2 Beta client (I run it occasionally to get build updates etc as they seem to come through every week or so). It loads, but after a few seconds, it crashes to desktop, with the option to send a report to the developers, and it generates a crash report.

Hoping someone can tell me what is going wrong and what I can do to fix it. I checked with other people, their clients are not crashing (they've been known to crash out in a similar fashion when they boot people from the servers at the ends of beta periods).

Here is the report. (All of it, sorry, the relevant part is likely in the first few lines though...)

See if DXDiag shows any errors
Click Start and type Dxdiag and press enter. Go through each tab to see if any errors show up.
Are you using the latest Drivers for your graphics card and sound card if you have one.

Try adding these switch commands to it

-sndwinmm, -dsound, -sndasio.

Create a shortcut to your game .Exe file. And copy the shortcut to the desktop. Right click the shortcut select properties. In the shortcut tab in the target line at the very end after the last " put a space then try the above one at a time. Click apply and ok. See if they work.

So for eg it will look something like this

Target: "C\Program Files\GW2.exe" -sndwinmm

Hi, thank you for the suggestions. I checked everything you mentioned - no errors is dxdiag, and I checked all my drivers now. I tried the switch commands too, none of them worked. Any ideas where to look next?

Hurr, suppose I should get myself memtest86 in the meantime...

Curse my bad luck with technology!

Yes I would check memtest see if any errors show up. If they dont ......

Did you manage to get any other games?

Did you try the game at fault in any of the compatibility modes.? XP may work
Create a shortcut to your game .exe and place the shortcut on desktop. Right click the shortcut and select properties, Click the compatibility tab. Try a different mode.
Is your page file system managed?

Right click My computer, Properties, Advanced system settings, Advanced tab, Performance ~ Settings, Advanced tab ~ Virtual memory, Change

Select your op system drive, and select system managed. If it is already on system managed, select no page file, click apply, click ok. Restart computer. This will clear the PF.

The once restarted go back in and do exact same selecting system managed click apply and ok and restart.

Remove your GPU. Click into control panel, progs and features and remove all Nvidia items. Restart once again (sigh I hate restarting so many times, gotta be done though)

Then download the drivers from Nvidia auto update -> Nvidia scan

When installing click custom install and click the clean install box and continue with install. Restart and see if thats any better

You mean physically remove the GPU or just trash all the GPU related stuff? Don't quite fancy touching the card, as you can see, my luck isn't too great with this sort of thing. Sorry if I'm being thick, my knowledge of fixing problems mainly comes from google, which isn't exactly the most reliable source.

Oh, and I grabbed GW1 to test since it's the quickest to install, no problems at all. Will try some other game later.

Might try my old RAM too, probably quicker than memtest.

NO i just mean remove Remove it from being installed rather then remove it altogether. Just remove all Nvidia progs and drivers.

Alright, I tried a clean install with the drivers, still no go. Only thing left to test now is the memory. I may even backup and reformat everything, just to make sure. If this still fails, I'm going to lay the blame on ArenaNet's client. Beta is beta, lol.

Well if u tried the drivers, and sorted the pagefile etc etc, then Yeh RAM check next is prob way to go. Check one stick at a time though if at all possible. You will have to remove others physically though for that so is up to yourself. BUT dont forget if other games are working, it maybe just that, that one game is dodgy. Maybe needs an update patch or something. Before you format or do any RAM testing (as that takes a good while) try a few games, if they all work id leave it well alone and try find a solution to getting the game to work rather then go at the comp. Keep me posted either way if you wouldnt mind

Hi there i dont know anything about this game or client , but i found this on the gw2 site , take a look at the "additional information" section.

The first thing you will need to obtain is the game client which can be downloaded and updated by carefully following the instructions below. We recommend that you begin downloading the client as soon as possible so you are ready for the upcoming event.

First, download the GW2 client here.
Once the download is complete, create a folder on your computer labeled Guild Wars 2 Beta.
We recommend creating this folder on your desktop for now.
Move the file GW2.exe into to the folder you just created.
Double click GW2.exe to start the download.
Allow the game to patch the necessary information from our file servers.
If possible, please try to download after 6PM PST or on the weekends, as there will be less people accessing the server during those times.
Enjoy!

Helpful Tip: Be sure to keep your client updated throughout the week to ensure that you can participate in the test. To keep your client updated, simply double click GW2.exe. Any updates will be downloaded and applied automatically. If you can access the Login screen, your client is fully updated and ready for the event!

If you would like to have Guild Wars 2 download overnight or need to repair Guild Wars 2, please try the following instructions:

Locate your GW2.exe file.
Right-click the file and select Create shortcut.
Rename this new shortcut to Guild Wars 2 Repair.
Right-click on Guild Wars 2 Repair and select Properties.
Locate the Target line and add –image to the end.
Example: C:\Games\Guild Wars 2 Beta\gw2.exe –image
Click Ok.

Once completed, double click Guild Wars 2 Repair to start the download. Once the game has been fully downloaded, the client will exit back to Windows. When you are ready to play, simply double click on GW2.exe to start the game.

Note: You are not able to actually start Guild Wars 2 from the shortcut Guild Wars 2 Repair. You must use GW2.exe.

Additional Information

I moved the file "GW2.exe" to a folder and launched it, but it immediately crashed. What’s wrong?

This could be caused by a number of issues, but here are a few things to check for:

Are you an administrator on your computer or on Windows Vista / 7?
You may need administrator privileges to run the client or properly access the folder in which your game client is located. Try starting GW2.exe by right-clicking on the file and selecting Run as Administrator.
Is the folder that contains the game set to Read Only?
The client needs to add files to the folder through patching before it will run properly. To check this, right-click on your Guild Wars 2 Beta folder and select Properties. From here, un-check the option for Read-Only and left click on Ok.

Hope this is of some help :)

Yeah, the 'Run as Admin' thing is a well known problem, and sadly not the one I am having. I am able to patch the game, that menu causes no problem, but as soon as I hit 'Play' and get to the login screen, it crashes with the above error. More and more I am suspecting this is just one of the many trials and tribulations of a game still in beta. I think I'll go mither their tech support and maybe it will get fixed... maybe!

Will keep you updated. Downloading some other games now to see what happens.

edit: Just got a random game off steam, not super graphically intensive, about average I guess - works fine. Gonna go find some disks and try some more...

Hope they all play ok , i would say if everything else is playing fine then just put it down to a badly coded client/game , might be worth a look at the nvidia forums & see if its an issue with the current drivers for the GTX680 - if it is possibly they will address the issue in a future driver update ?

Never the less , its only my personal opinion , but i wouldn't go ripping ram / components out of the rig for an issue with just one game , not if everything else is perfectly fine :)

So far all games tested work fine, all is well.

Good idea to go talk to nVidia forums, more likely to get a faster response than from the Guild Wars 2 developers, who only open the beta-specific tech forum during the beta events. Perhaps I'll try track some of the devs down on the Wiki or at least make it a known problem on there.

I just don't want to miss out on the next beta event because the game is going to look stunning on this machine!

Looks like it is a client/hardware compatibility issue!

Been in touch with Support, got this back:

Hello,

Thank you for providing this updated information.

We have been collecting reports of crashes and incomplete installations for users using similar computer builds to your own. We will be adding the information for your specific machine to the reports already sent to Development, so that they may compile the information and work towards a resolution. We hope that this and other issues will be addressed in the next new build.

Should you wish to try another troubleshooting option, see if turning 3D/Stereoscopic settings back -on- makes a difference.

If you happen to have access to another video card that you may be able to test instead, and can see if launching Guild Wars 2 produces different results, definitely let us know.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and want to assure you that we are working hard to compile information and resolve this issue. Should you have any further questions, concerns, or information, definitely let us know by responding to this ticket.

Regards,
Shannon

Eeeh, I don't have a spare card - unsure the one in my other computer will fit. Will check in the morning.

Thank you for the help you two!

Your welcome Kokabel.

Just wish we could have resolved the game for you, but as you said all other games are working fine, then It would obviously look like the game has issues.

Changing your card completely seems like a lot of work for the sake of 1 game. Most likely patches will come out soon and prob eliminate the issue anyway

We have been collecting reports of crashes and incomplete installations for users using similar computer builds to your own

If they have been getting crashes across the board then Its their issue, not the people with the comp like yours. Lol

If you happen to have access to another video card

It very well may work, but then you have the issue of installing drivers for new card. The re installing the card in now again with all the drivers. After all what would you do if the older card does work. Keep swapping it every time ya want a game. I doubt it very much.

Personally, I would keep trying the game with card now, and keep looking for patches and keep mailing the game makers etc.

Hope you get it working in the end anyway, and would appreciate heads up here if/when you get it sorted and let us know the story with it.

Cheers

I did some more googling today, since the next beta is this coming weekend and I am getting a little worried I won't be able to enjoy it. More people with the problem, and the camp seems divided into people who either have graphics cards with issues (or really old cards), or people who have the 4GB 680. Oh boy.

In the case of the 680, I found a post on a German forum which seems plausible to me - thanks to Chrome's translation:

"The error message could indicate a simple permissions problem. It can, of course, but really with the 4 GB of video memory are related. Guild Wars 2 is a 32-bit application. As such, it is packed in a 64-bit operating system into a virtual 32-bit "bubble". More than 4 GB (whether in RAM or the graphics card) can not therefore be addressed by GW2. If there are no control mechanisms that prevent GW2 for some reason always tries to capture the entire video memory in its virtual 32-bit bubble, leading to an out-of-memory error (0 MB) and fast crash. However, we can not do anything, except to rely on ArenaNet (or nVidia drivers that do not report 32-bit applications, the entire video memory). "

Not the best translation out there, but you get the gist of it. (Basically, I think it's something like the client being 32bit application, it can only read up to 2gb vRAM, so when it tries to look at the 4gb's worth, it missreads the vRAM as 0, and then crashes.)

Any ideas if there might be a workaround so I get some playtime this weekend? I'm redownloading the client to see if it's been fixed, but I somehow doubt it...

Hi there :)

I have exact the same problem.

I have a Gainward GTX680 *4gb* Phantom and the same crash :)

Have reported this problem to ncsoft and arenanet...

Got answers that the problem is known and they are working hard on a fix...

Hmm now soon is the next beta event and the problem is stil not fixed

Im just done with patching the client with the big patch but it still crashes with the same error.. the VRAM 0mb problem :(

We just can hope they will fix this soon ..

i mean .. can it really be so hard to fix such a bug ?! i dunno :)

sorry for bad english im german :)

have a nice day ^^

Other 32bit applications must encounter the same issue with this card, and so far every game I have tested has been fine - so yeah, you would think it would get fixed and that it shouldn't be too difficult to solve. Seems like a bit of a mistake to not understand that this would happen with 4GB cards. Lets just hope our luck changes in the next few days...

Morning ^^

I got news from ncsoft :)

here is the answer they wrote me:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello.

Thank you for providing the requested information.

I have actually see this particular issue once before with another client. Can you try the following settings and let me know if this fixes your issue?

1. Locate your Guild Wars 2 folder.

2. Right-click on "GW2.exe" and select "Properties."

3. Click the "Compatibility" tab.

4. Checkmark "Run in 256 colors."

5. Double click "GW2.exe"

Should this resolve the issue, please keep in mind that you may have to disable this feature in order to patch the client and then re-enable to play.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any additional issues, questions or concerns.

I tried this trick BUT it wont work.. the client gives me directly another small error window and it tells me that my gfx card is not supported for the client ...

Maybe you have more luck with this trick....

Let me know it :)

Yeah, I tried that some time ago too, there's absolutely no way it could work, since the problem is with the game program itself, and how it cannot read the vRAM correctly. I would reply and inform them that was a really stupid suggestion. The game is going to try and read the entire 4GB whether it's running in any particular mode or not.

I think I will write to them some more today. They really should not be giving out bad advice like they gave to you though...

Hi guys , don't know if it will help , but i have had a similar issue with GTA4 not recognizing all of my card ram , it would only see 1gb of my 3gb , the fix for this was to go to the games shortcut ( or make one yourself ) & go to the properties & in the target line put "-nolimit" at the end of the line ( you may possibly need to put a space first , cant remember tbh as it was a while ago & i don't have the game anymore)

So if its possible to just load up the game with its own exe instead of the game client ( you can do this with steam games at leased all that happens it the steam client loads up on its own.)

Might be worth a try

But if your trying to stop the game from reading the whole 4 gb then this will not work - possibly there is another phrase that can be put in to the target line to limit the amount of card ram it sees ?
