Desktop PC Spec

Hi - thanks for helping me out with this one, my first new PC in a looog while, and well overdue! While I would like to build my own, I just don't have the time these days...

Use: Primarily Lightroom/photoshop, especially single threaded responsiveness (I don't do so much large volume exporting). Occasional light gaming (Forza), but not too worried about the spec here
Monitors: 1 x 4k and 1 x 1920x1080
GPU: I already have a Palit GTX 1660 6GB that I intend to use
Storage: I have a 2TB SSD and 2TB HDD that I will install for storage
Budget: currently this is about £1300 inc VAT, don't want to spend any more

From what I have read, Intel has a marginal single threaded advantage in Lightroom, so went for that. Might do some light overclocking to max single thread performance in the future, though that is pretty new to me...

Feedback welcome - thanks :)

Some questions:
  • Case advice would be great, as I am not too sure what to go for here
  • Same for cooler as I have never had liquid - really looking for system longevity here as will be a while before I upgrade again

Two things I’d recommend are remove BullGuard as its unneeded and has caused issues for people in the past, and Windows Defender does the job perfectly on its own. Second thing is I’d recommend a bigger PSU (850w in my opinion would be good) as it’d help your system last a lot longer and give you room for upgrading.

Also, unless its just a personal preference for you I’d suggest seeing the link Martin showed you of AMD vs Intel as it shows how AMD is ahead of intel as it performs a lot better and is better price for performance. The thread also highlights the issues of intel so🙂

You should check out Puget Systems (a US pc builder) for recommendations and benchmarks for all types of editing programmes, including LR and PS. AMD beat Intel by a distance in the CPU stakes.

Thanks I_ARY - yes agree on BullGuard, I had left that on by mistake.... thanks for the advice on the PSU, I will push that up to 850W

Hey BIGFOOT - I read through some of the benchmarks and for batch exporting, the AMD CPUs crush intel... the big issue that I have in my current system is editing response time, which is a single threaded issue, hence picking intel so far....

So my question is, would a similar performance system be cheaper with an AMD CPU based on this use case/spec?

Though I should add that my current system is 8+ years old, and is well overdue a reinstall of windows. So either way I am expecting a massive bump in performance!

Going into the detail of the benchmarks for PS, it still looks like AMD beats Intel in editing tasks. The new Zen3 AMD CPUs beat Intel even in single threaded performance. I don’t know what the Intel systems cost, as my currently awaited build is with a 5900x. All the experts on here claim that you get much more bang for your buck with AMD.

Edit: I also checked the LR benchmarks and is pretty much the same story. The 5880x or 5900x seem to have the best performance, although the 5600x is no slouch.

The only advantage Intel really had left was single threaded performance, which was marginal to start with when comparing the 3000 series AMD CPUs, now the 5000 series is out, theyve overtaken in all areas.

The main issue is Intel are using older tech/designs, cant remember if its a 14 or 12nm architecture, but AMD moved on to 7nm a while ago. Intel are also planning to say with the same core design with their next series, not sure about the one after that. Intel have thermal problems, security problems...list goes on an on...

It you are buying a current release/generation CPU, AMD is a much better choice, not only on price but performance as well.

OK - so the overwhelming feedback is that AMD is the way to go!!

Could someone help me to tweak the spec CPU/MB wise? FYI on-board wifi is only a nice to have - it seemed to be the same price either way for the ASUS one.

My goal here is that the spec should do well for 5+ years, fingers crossed!

This is the build I'd recommend for you. I've gone Ryzen as it still seems to beat Intel for your usage.

The 4000D is a fantastic case with great airflow
The Ryzen 7 will comfortably handle all your Lightrooming and Photoshoping
The motherboard gives you 2 Gen 4 M.2 SSD slots but this could be changed to the B550 if you have no plans to change your SSD or the SSD isn't a Gen 4 M.2
32GB of RAM comfortably handle your tasks
The M.2 SSD will allow Windows to boot in seconds and with your added drives there should be lots of space
The RMx is a great PSU and will run your system comfortably along with leave room for upgrades down the road
The Ryzen 7 will need some better cooling so I've upgraded to the cooler master 240 AIO. AIO coolers are built to an incredibly high standard and rarely break. And anyway, that's what the PCS warranty is for!
I've taken away the wifi on the board and added it with a card as this also adds bluetooth

Points where you could save - The motherboard, changing this to a B550 will save some with not much effect. The 3600 speed ram could be changed for 3200 speed

Points where you could spend - The AIO could be upgraded to a Corsair H110i. Some extra case fans could be added to keep temps down but this will increase noise. A larger M.2 SSD just for that extra safety for the size of windows

This should be a very solid build for your uses and should last you a long time.

Great build, highly recommend! If you plan on doing really heavy rendering and editing, then I’d suggest 64GB of RAM. If not, then 32 will be more than fine paired with that Zen 3 AMD Processor for your needs.

Hallo OP! I agree with all the above - AMD is the way to go. I would rather see you add in a larger M.2 Drive though - ideally this is where you want your OS, as well as LR and PS also. I would recommend at least 500GB. If money is tight, you can drop back to the 970 M.2 500GB from the 980 256GB with just a single £ difference. Yes, it is half the speed of the 980, but it will be so much faster than your SSD or HDD that you will still be completely shocked at the pace!

You LR Catalogs should be on a fast drive also - you will most likely have room for them on a 500GB M.2 - just make sure you back them up to another separate drive - or alternatively you could keep them on your SSD. LR spends most of it's time interacting with your catalog, so the speed of where it is located will directly impact your exprereince of moving through and working with your images. I personally went with two M.2 drives - with my catalog on the second one for maximum response. (Albeit it with cheap and slow M.2's!! :D)

32GB of RAM sounds great for how you describe your intended use. I have found that 32GB only sees the first hint of possibly being threatened when I do some really big photomerges - like 20 RAW files into a single panaroma - WHILE AT THE SAME TIME doing something slightly silly in PS. So 32GB gets a thumbs up from me.

I also have the 5600X and it handles LR and PS really well. The 5800X will chew up your intended workflow and spit it out quickly!

In terms of motherboard - others will know the traits better than I - but it should be mentioned that the B550 boards take two M.2's also. I have a PRIME B550 PLUS with my two M.2's installed (the second slot is PCIe 3.0 instead of 4.0 which means it has a max data transfer rate of about 3,500 MBps). My understanding is that the TUF 570 boards will give you great VRM and chipset cooling to let you push a heavy duty GPU and a heavily overclocked CPU happily. I'm not entirely sure if you really need that by the sounds of your intro?

Here is my attempt:

Back to a B550 Motherboard (wait for more advice here from others when it comes to even light Overclocking) - and a 500GB EVO 970 M.2 - and a second 250GB EVO 970 M.2 for you catalogs and a few smaller games.

Original Photo files can go on your SSD or HDD (mine are on HDD) as LR doesn't interact with them after import, until you need to export again.

Hi All - found a bit of time to get back on this and tweaked the recommended spec, see below. Feedback welcome - especially on the CPU cooler and PSU (which might be OTT)

One other question - are the extra PSU cables / SATA cables that come with these parts included in the shipping box? As I have extra HDDs to add once it arrives.

Thanks as always!

Looks like a good build to me! What was the idea behind the 500GB SSD and the 250GB SSD when you already have a 2TB SSD and a 2TB HDD? Personally I'd just go for a 500GB Gen 4 M.2 (either the Seagate Firecuda 520 or the Samsung 980 Pro) then just use the drives you already own or the rest. The CPU Cooler, is perfectly fine for the CPU, if you wanted to it could be upgraded. The PSU could be seen as a little overkill but it's worth investing in the PSU now as it'll last longer and cover you for upgrades down the road- the RMx 850W is a great choice and it's not something I'd change.

And as Martin said, they'll put them in the welcome box but you could always request the ones you need be connected for easy installation.

Thanks - looking at the instructions, there are 2 SATA cables with the MB - so hoped they would be included?
