Very nice!

What's your approx budget for a desk, what kind of ballpark as as I'm sure you know, it varies enormously?

I tried a local furniture maker who specialises in this sort of thing. For him to source and make it, I was expecting to pay something in the region of £1000+. However, beyond his initial call back I never got any replies from further enquiries, through phone calls (straight to "leave a message after the tone", which I did), texts, emails, messages through his site messaging system. No response what-so-ever.
I needed a new desk, my 25 year old Argos special was just too small for the ultrawide monitor, etc.

I ended up going to a local custom kitchen maker, who made me a custom desk to fit pefectly into the space I have. That also cost roughly a grand, but they were perfectly happy to make my desk for me. It isn't a slab of timber with resin casting or anything fancy, just highly compressed chipboard in a nice timber style veneer. It's in three pieces, a base unit for my new computer, with slide out keyboard drawer, the actual desktop which just sits on top of the base, and the shelf unit behind my monitor.

*cough* Nearly a grand for some chipboard?????? Granted it looks nice but....a grand? For chipboard? I am out of words...I need to go and lie down
I had too lie down as well

It wasn't easy finding anyone to make it, I don't have the tools or skills.
Several places wanted more, and it wouldn't be made to measure, just a standard size.
Other places just wouldn't. The cabinet maker never replied, and still hasn't.
Basically there was only one place who could and would. It cost almost a grand

I'd already budgeted for a grand plus, after looking at the cabinet makers web site. I saw his "slab of timber with resin casting" type pieces.
What he does is, saw the slab along the middle, put the two pieces into a casting mould, sawn edges outwards, then fills the resulting space in the middle with molten glass. Obviously there's a lot more preperation involved, and a lot of finishing off to make a nice piece of furniture. It isn't just "saw it in half". What I had been thinking of was, three parallel cuts, diagonally through the slab. Turn one large piece over and marry up the two shorter cuts, leaving a V shaped space at one end, for the desk top. The two smaller pieces would make the visible end leg, also with a V shaped space between them. That would make what he called "a waterfall".The rest of the desk wouldn't be that visible anyway. and the resin/glass parts would be great for RGB. However, I waited, messaged, emailed, phoned, many times, over several months, to no effect. When I tried the kitchen maker and they could and would, I had the grand ready, so, when the price was a grand, I just sighed and paid.
