Freezing/Unresponsive PC after installing nvidia GTX 460

Hello,

I posted earlier this month about a problem with my PCSpecialist PC and a broken/breaking nvidia 8800GTX. After all the discussion, I replaced my temporary card (ATI 4550) with a new nvidia GTX460 (the Palit, 1GB version). I installed it yesterday (after uninstalling all the ATI drivers) and everything was fine, had no problems at all and my PC would run Mass Effect 2, Batman Arkham asylum, etc.

So I came to use my PC today and everytime I use it it freezes and becomes unresponsive to mouse clicks and ctrl+alt+del keystrokes. The only way it will work is in safe mode, which makes me think it is a driver problem of some kind. I installed the drivers on the CD that came with the new card as well as downloading the latest from nvidia's website so I think they're up-to-date.

Does anyone have any advice for what to try to solve this issue?

Many thanks in advance

I installed the drivers on the CD that came with the new card as well as downloading the latest from nvidia's website so I think they're up-to-date.

Your probably right with the driver issue theory.

Presuming the card is being fed the correct power (PCI-E connections etc) then you can go ahead and uninstall all Nvidia drivers / software from add/remove programs in the control panel.

Once thats done open device manager (start menu search this if your not sure) and find the GTX 460 in the list, right click it and select uninstall the device, in the popup box click to delete the driver as well.

Once thats done it should come up as a standard vga adaptor or the generic MS driver. You can now download a fresh copy of the latest driver from nvidia.co.uk and install that.

After a reboot give it a go and let us know what happens.

@Gorman: I think it is being fed the correct power, I plugged in the two PCI-E connections that used to power my 8800GTX into the slots of my GTX460 and I'm using a 700W quad rail PSU.

Am going to try the driver delete/reinstall now.

Well the driver uninstall then reinstall seems to have done the trick, tho I will post again if the same thing happens again!

Also, does anyone know why my monitor occasionally flickers? it isn't all the time, only really noticeable on vertical lines and seems to go away when I change the phase adjustment on my monitors image setting menu.

Once you've changed the phase adjustment, do you then change it back in order for it to re-occur, or does it start to occur again after a short period?

@PCS: it starts to occur again but not straight after I've made the adjustment. Its been taking a good 30-45mins after a phase adjustment before it starts 'wobbling'
