Games to play?

Just to comment on the spec more generally, if you can stretch the budget a little further I'd suggest a better case (e.g. Corsair Spec 03) which has more cooling options and support for more future GPUs.

And the VS 450W PSU, as in addition to a higher wattage it also has an additional power connector that can be used for GPUs, which means you will be much less limited in what you can upgrade to in the future.

I have £4 in my bank account, I'm broke now No more upgrades for me.

As for games, there's a free trial of Battlefield 1 available on EA Origin so you can try that out.

DOOM is £10 on steam.

Fallout 4 is £10 on Gamers Gate at the moment.

Thanks! Is DOOM fun? The graphics look amazing but it doesn't look very fun it just seems like you go up to zombie things and smash their skulls.

I have Fallout 4 on PS4 so when it drops to like £5 I'll probably buy it in PC. (Before anybody attacks me I'm aware PC is better)

Doom is awesome fun if you like shooters, it's so fast and good story.

Am I mistaken?
Yes. Note the articles I linked and charts I posted. I can link more as well:

http://www.techspot.com/review/1325-intel-pentium-g4560/page5.html

But basically it will outperform your spec above, and cost less + be much less effort when you need to upgrade the CPU.

With regards to the dual-cores-not-running-some-games thing, older Pentiums were just plain dual cores and sometimes had this issue with a few games (though there were usually workarounds).

However, the Kaby Lake pentiums such as the G4560 are dual cores with hyperthreading, which means they have 4 threads, not just 2. This makes them very much like i3 CPUs, which have been budget gaming kings for a long while now and never had problems running those games that disliked CPUs with only 2 threads.

The FX 6300 was a weak CPU when it launched in 2012:

FX-6300-FX-4300-67.jpg
(It can't manage 60fps in Skyrim. In. Freaking. Skyrim.)

And it hasn't aged well.

I loved DooM.

One thing that really had appeal for me, though, was that it plays more like the original PC version of Halo (primarily in pace of character etc) than the hyper-speed that the original game ran at (by the way, if anyone is interested, Adrian Carmack released a whole new level for the original about 18 months ago, completely out of the blue).

And once you've played it through, try it on ultra-nightmare. It has permadeath - you die and it deletes your saved game. You can only quit between level loads.

To add a few more names to the list

Shadow of Mordor for £3.19 http://store.steampowered.com/app/241930/Middleearth_Shadow_of_Mordor/
It's an absolutely phenomenal game. Looks stunning, great gameplay and combat, plenty of content. One of the best games I've played.

And Skyrim of course.

Borderlands 2 is a great shooter.

Saints Row 3 complete for £2.74. Like GTA but doesn't take itself seriously.

For strategy, any of the Total War titles (even an old one like Medieval II). Civ 5 complete for £8 http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/575/

If you want to bargain-shop for games, this site is useful: https://isthereanydeal.com/

It tells you the current price, regular price, and lowest price of any game you search on Steam and a number of other stores like Bundlestars, Humble, etc. So you can tell whether a sale is a good price or just something they called a sale to get you to buy it. Anmd if you see a deal somewhere it's a quick way to check for alternative, lower prices elsewhere.

That's awesome, thanks!

you mentioning the valve pack reminds me, half life series is an absolute must, graphics are dated but still some of the best games ever made and they're cheap, you can pick up the orange box off steam for very little.

Half-Life 1 is of my favorite games of all time. It's the best sci-fi shooter that takes no prisoners. Way better than modern shooters. imo. The second favourite is Max Payne.

Half-Life is really great game but you try to play Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 is awesome game from Half-Life 1.
