I like the optimus but I cant see an option for selecting an i7-8xx series cpu. would it be possible to select this customly? Please advise and let me know if any other models would be better for his needs. P.S. forgot to add he renders a lot of HD video and CPU intensive 3d work. hence the 8 series i7. also please dont suggest a desktop as for some reason his mother wont let him have one!

Yeah unfortunately the GTX 460M is out of your budget but this laptop is cheaper and will perform better in games than the original one:

I'm guessing you already have a spare copy of windows 7 because you didn't include it with your original spec.

8GB of RAM isn't necessary but it might be in a few years and since it's still quite far below your budget it's not a bad idea.

I'm pretty sure the laptop's motherboard is limited to the CPU's from the drop-down list, the i7-640m is a good processor though. It may not be a true quad core but it does have hyperthreading for 4 threads.

Ye you dont need an i7 840 in such a laptop because the limiting factor is the gpu anyway and still would be at the gtx 460m lvl
