Gaming PC

Hi all,

Looking to replace an aging recoil laptop with a high spec gaming PC with a view to it lasting for a good generation +. The most demanding game I play currently is msfs2020 and to say this struggles on a RTX 2070 is an understatement, so hoping for a setup to provide really nice fps.

I don't currently have a monitor but I will definitely be getting something along the lines of these or around this price range

Dell Alienware AW3423DW
Dell Alienware AW3423DWF
Samsung Odyssey G9

Really like the idea of an Ultrawide 1440p monitor but I will more than likely get a 4k monitor down the line too.

Hoping you guys will take a good look at my build and monitor pairing and can advise whether I'm on the right track or if you think I am paying for more extra heat than extra performance to warrant the current price and whether there are any potential savings.

For e.g. Is it best practice to have just the OS installed on the primary SSD and games installed to secondary for optimum stutter free performance or does it really not matter?

Many thanks in advance!

I think the go to config for gaming has to be the new AMD 7800x3D.

Something like this will be better for gaming, cooler, and save you a few hundred £££:

Case
CORSAIR 5000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.0GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5)
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI (WIFI 6E, DDR5, PCIe 5.0)
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
24GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4090 - HDMI, DP
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO M.2, PCIe 4.0 NVMe (up to 7450MB/R, 6900MB/W)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 530 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 7300MB/R, 6900MB/W) - better endurance than the Samsung
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1200W HX SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® PLATINUM, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable

Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING - no need as the Corsair AIOs come with better paste, pre-applied

You could even drop the cooler down to the H115i, the 7800X3D is crazy efficient maxxing at around 100W, it's mind boggling really. On par thermally with the non X variants at the lower TDP. And that's even accounting for running a PBO overclock.

That's fantastic guys many thanks for the input and advice, quite a few £ shaved off too which is a bonus. Does anyone have any recommendation regarding the monitors I mentioned, AW or G9 when paired with a 4090?

Also is it worth having the OS installed on the primary SSD and games installed to secondary to increase performance or does it not make much difference?

Thanks again!

I'm biased, I have the original G9 and absolutely love it, BUT it definitely has drawbacks. If your budget extended to the G9 Neo, that's a worthwhile improvement if you can find it on sale somewhere. The regular G9 is the most immersive experience from a monitor I've ever had but it does have a nasty halo effect in dark scenes as it's backlight system is not enough to produce true HDR even though it can sustain 1000Nits. It only has 10 local zones for the backlight array.

The G9 Neo has true HDR local zone dimming array of 2048 zones.

The Dell Alienware AW3423DW is a fully fledged OLED which means every single pixel is it's own dimming zone. It's the best HDR experience you can really get currently. From an all out image quality perspective, this is the clear winner.

Between the regular G9 and the Dell above, the Dell wins by a country mile.

Between the G9 Neo and the Dell, the Dell still wins out in sheer image quality, but the G9 Neo for me would win in immersion for the games that can support superwide resolution. The G9 experience for me is more like having a VR headset on than a gaming monitor in front of you, it's impossible to describe until you experience it.

The Alienware AW3423DWF is the newer model, but it uses exactly the same panel, the only difference is that it's got GSync compatible rather than the full GSync on the DW model. There have been some issues with HDR content on the newer model vs the old.

Thank you SpyderTracks. Will see if I can find the G9 Neo on sale somewhere as I love the idea of the 49" for an amazing immersive experience, sounds fantastic. Thanks again

I don't think there are many deal on it at the moment...price seems to hover around the £1750 mark.

BUYER BEWARE

I can find one for £1250, but I think it's an error...as the link takes you to the non-Neo version on their website, and if you search for the Neo you will see this...

However, when you click through it's actually £1677.

This is the cheapest I've found it:

Don't know the company, so no idea how genuine they are.

It really is something else, it's quite wonderful.

I did quite an in depth review of the setup of mine and the overall experience.

The original G9 was buggy from the get go, and took a lot of manual steps to get ready for use, I believe the Neo is far better in that regard, and it's been out a while now, so the firmware should be much more stable.

But if looking at both the G9's in reviews, bear in mind that they were both problematic on release. The original G9 was actually recalled and the power supply was redone and released under a different model number a few months later. But you'll see loads of negative reviews for both, try to concentrate on newer reviews where they've specified they're using the latest firmwares.

After the trials of setting mine up, I've had really smooth sailing since, and absolutely love it.

£1661 at Selfridges, but yes, it's higher than I was hoping

An ex display one would be the best bet if you can find one, Amazon only have one with dead pixels and not from Amazon Warehouse but a questionable seller unfortunately

Thanks guys, really appreciate the help. Looks like I still have some time to look around for a Neo as the 7800x3D is still listed as pre-order

...and just to support what SpyderTracks is saying, the G9 Neo is a monster in both performance, quality and size.

I've got the Alienware AW3423DW, but only because 1) I don't have the space for a G9 Neo; 2) I felt it was too much of a curve for me (when I saw the original G9 in person).

With stand the Alienware AW3423DW
  • 3440 x 1440
  • 800mm (W)
  • 310mm (D)
  • 415-525mm (H)
  • 1800R
With stand the G9 Neo
  • 5120 x 1440
  • 1150mm (W)
  • 418mm (D)
  • 537mm (H)
  • 1000R

Just about to pull the trigger but 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) is now out of stock.

However 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) AMD is still available.

Could someone please confirm whether there's any difference between the two? I wasn't aware of any AMD specific RAM.

Personally I doubt there is any difference but just wanted to run it by the experts ;)

More than happy to wait until the original memory is back in stock if there is a difference.

Thanks in advance!

AMD RAM is EXPO overclockable rather than XMP, it's better for AM5
