help! new laptop.......i hate it! windows 8 and the trackpad problem

I got a new laptop today from pc specialist with windows 8 on it.

apart from the fact the software is awful! how on earth they can produce rubbish like this is beyond me? (microsoft that is, not pc specialist) I have noticed the trackpad buttons do not work? neither left or right click works.

its so annoying when in the normal desktop (not that stupid metro thing). I cant move things around or anything? am I doing something wrong or have I a faulty trackpad?

if its faulty, im returning for a refund as I cant wait for a replacement, i'll have to go and buy a pile of poop from currys (not with windows 8 on I hope) as I need the laptop as im away for a few weeks from Sunday.

I will give them a bell in the morning, hopefully its just that. if not currys here I come.............I have emailed them about a possible rma just incase its not driver related as I believe I have to inform them of problems asap on arrival.

is windows 8 as bad as my initial impression?

There are mixed reviews,but most problems I've read about seem to be driver related.

got it working, used the drivers disk that came with laptop.

slowly coming to terms with windows 8.

i had a surface rt for a few days, but the touch was easier to use than this on the laptop.........still with the trackpad working it does make it easier!

Best fix for Windows 8's horrible user interface.
It turns out that most of the Windows 7 start menu code is still buried inside explorer.exe. This £2 app hides away Metro and brings back the old start menu using (mostly) Microsoft's original code.

You then just need a bit of tweaking of file associations to make video and music open up in non-metro apps.

This is not a problem with the drivers. I purchased a Samsung and immediatly noticed that the mousepad had become interactive. They are trying to make it more like the touchscreens on the IPAD. The problem is that every touch is taken as a gesture. Suddenly the cursor would jump to the middle of a document, or eveything I had typed would highlight in blue and disappear. If that happens on a document, one can just click undo, but undo can not be used in all cases. I took the compute back and got a Dell. I loved my last Dell, but upon taking it home realized it was doing the same thing. I called the company and they turned off the interactive features but believe me, did little to fix the problem. Took it to BESTBUY and they further worked on the interactivity but the problem still exists. My friend bought and Izus and the problem exists on that. I HATE THIS NEW COMPUTER FEATURE AND AM READY TO EXCHANGE FOR AN OLDER MODEL.

I'm not touching windows 8 with a barge pole for about a year till they sort there &£@" out. I only use windows 7 for gaming. I dual boot and use Linux mint most of the time for browsing the web and what not. I was amazed the last time I installed it on my last laptop how it installed all the drivers automatically and everything just worked. I'm looking forward to putting Linux mint on my new Optimus when I get it.

Windows 8 is just fine, once you get rid of Metro using the link I posted.

It improved the boot times of my Optimus 2 by about 25 seconds (measured from power on to Firefox loading and accepting user input, both OSes were fresh clean installs) and I've had no software compatibility issues other than those that were also a problem in Windows 7. All the Windows 7 drivers, including the Clevo hotkey driver, worked just fine.

Is the touchpad a Synaptics one on this particular laptop, if so going into the mouse settings you should be able to disable gestures. It's nothing to do with Windows 8, it's a feature of the touchpad.

Frankly I like Windows 8 and most of the problems I've had are due to my inexperience with it. I use metro, but certainly not in the way Microsoft expect.

About the only serious problem I've had with Windows 8 is an audio driver issue, but it's more to do with the bios than anything else.

I have used various Windows 8 betas and the final install for months now, I have found it to be a fantastic UI experience once you get used to metro and you have a good quality track pad. The reason all my posts have been asking what the quality of the track pads in these custom built laptops is because of the fact that Windows 8 is horrid to use if the quality of the drivers for the track pad is poor (Synaptic anyone?)
