help - optimus 2, can't add a 2nd drive :(

i recall when buying a replacement drive for my PS3 that the 2.5" drives come in different heights. i'm assuming 9.5mm thickness drives are ok?

as a p.s, i've seen a guide on here on replacing the primary drive, i asked for a caddy instead of an optical drive but i have a non functional cover of sorts (looks like a dvd drive). does that pop out or is it a case of removing something underneath and popping in the 2nd drive?

thanks all

TJ :)

The second hard drive fits into the dvd drive bay using the caddy,
I would assume the caddy is already in the dvd drive bay & needs to be taken out to install
the hard drive, not sure how the caddy is fixed, possibly a screw or screws on the bottom?

ta for the reply, problem is i can't see screws near where the false front for the caddy is.

2nd pic is what i assume is the caddy (with the false front removed)

the very bottom opening is for the current hard drive and the right hand side is where the heatsink and fan are.

i am assuming that the caddy is in there already of course.

I dont know about that model but in other laptops I have seen the screw for holding the optical drive bay in is in line with the centre of the bezel and about 5 inches in (its right at the back of the internal optical drive), my guess would be the screw half way up on the far right of your image.

If its anyway similar to the vertexII, remove the screws holding the main drive, and there should be a small piece of metal sticking out which belongs to the rear of the optical drive/caddy screwed in place. Undo the screw and push the caddy/drive out, should slide out easy enough.

thanks guys but no go. the email i've had from pcs says to remove the screw in the middle of the laptop on it's own - no diff. the "caddy" is not budging. i'm wondering now if someone may have forgotten to put it in.

trying live support now.

If they had forgotten to put it in you would have a big hole and nothing to attach the face plate to, something is in there so one would assume that is the caddy, you just have to work out what is holding it in.

the caddy will connect against the sata data and power connectors for the optical drive which will probably be enough to hold it in place, normally the weight of the optical drive is enoughif you tip the laptop on its side, or you can just gently pull on the optical drive tray to get it out, you may have to do something similar to unseat it.

tried that too mate :(

turned it upside down and gave it a light tap and nothing. the reason i think there's something wrong is that there's nothing to actually pull on to take it out. it's either whack the laptop and hope - or, try to force it out with a screwdriver or something.

when i swapped the drive in my PS3 there's something to pull on to remove it.

p.s tried live support but i gave up after no response in 50 mins :(

Back phots so apologies, also it is a vertex so is probs a little different, but may be similar and give you a rough idea.

thanks mate but i don't have that near my internal drive. i took some pics.

sorry about the small text - the 2 circles are the screws that have been removed (email support said to remove the middle one) but it's not budging. where the intel SSD is, the only screws (2) are to remove the SSD itself.

the caddy itself. no latch or handle or anything to pull on to remove it. only way i can see to do it is to ply it out

It most likely wouldnt be something you pull out, more likely a push out one. Undo all the screws you can see, and remove as much of the back of the laptop as you can and have a nosey around.
Edit: Could be wrong, just found this:
Got my Optimus II unboxed finally yesterday, and installed Windows. Got my Fenvi caddy installed, now i'm done using the DVD drive constantly (loud drive by the way, compared to my Toshiba!) with the original Optimus faceplate on it, fits perfectly, nice one PCS, nice that it's perfect... swine seems to be only removable though by taking of the HDD cover and sliding it out from in there though... any other suggestions, bar having a couple of ribbons hanging out of the laptop constantly? :p - I think it will be in there permanently though, but for now, it's just sat there snugly without even being screwed in.
?
Two questions, it seems to be spinning the drive constantly? Is this normal, or am I just thinking it's spinning fast constantly because simply it seems louder than my 7200 750gb in the main tray? maybe cause it's in the caddy though? Wasn't really all that audible in my old laptop, when not being accessed constantly... I wasn't happy with the fit in the caddy though, very tight connection, had to spudge it in, with a coaster haha. Despite this, it's fairly loose in there, on the Y axis. Maybe some foam in there would make it sit nicer, and quieter... amazed it doesn't even screw in also, but hey!

Been trying to find a thread that was made a little while ago, I believe it was for the enigma or something and showed how its done, cant seem to locate it though...
Edit2: Found it

i've tried removing the other section on the right (there's only 2 panels on the back of this) and that has the RAM and the heatsink and a fan. no screws there for this.

ok got it!!!! working now, will post how i did it in detail after food (my takeaways just arrived ) :D

ok i did need to open the pri drive space but not to unscrew something, just to push the damn caddy out!

anyway, unscrew the 1 screw at the centre (ignore the panel removed, not needed)

then open the space at the bottom left where the pri drive is.

and use a small screwdriver or something to push to the left and it just slides out.

p.s sorry if images are showing in wrong direction, imageshack is ignoring my rotate requests.

p.p.s - thanks to everyone in the thread for your help and advice :D

hopefully this will help the next laptop noob with this prob
