I was wondering about the speeds of a certain proccesor i7-740QM which is clocked at 1.73GHz and was wondering if that speed would be scaled if only two of the four cores were in use????

Yes it would scale accordingly, something like: 1 core = 2.93Ghz 2 cores = 2.53Ghz 3 cores = 2.13Ghz 4 cores = 1.73Ghz

Well if you're playing a game that only uses 3 cores then those 3 will be boosted.
