I was wondering, can the i7 990X be overclocked to 5Ghz?

yh it can but i dont see why it even needs to be unless doing intense work but it still doesnt even needs to overclock as the cpu alone copes fine with pretty much anything thrown at it.

which is illegal in the UK, there was a guy from the UK who overclocked a 980x (something like that) to 6GHz with dry ice

liquid nitrogen isnt illegal to buy in the UK , but good luck finding some :0)

Liquid nitrogen will not hang around for long. The larger the flask for storage, the longer it will last.
A five gallon Dewar will still be half full after two weeks, but a two pint tea flask will not have much remaining after a day or two.

Well that guy is talking out of his arse.
Unlike some compressor refrigerants, LN2 is not toxic, not carcinogenic, can be released freely into the atmosphere and is not restricted in any way by the Montreal Protocol.

Agreed, not illegal but difficult to come by.. I used to use it in the labs allot at Uni.
