I am having major trouble connecting to the internet through my desktop from pcspecialist. I have called my ISP and they were unable to help me, they gave me a number to call but it is not avaliable at the weekends. I am just wondering if pcspecialist would help out with this sort of problem. It is only on my desktop, all other computers and devices connect fine.

Are you connecting through wireless card or ethernet,is it not connecting at all or are you getting
a poor signal?

I have tried both, same problem with each saying i dont have a connection. Last thing the ISP asked me to do was
cmd
ipconfig/renew
and it came up saying 'unable to contact your DHCP server'

Then they gave me a number to call for 'thomson reuters' but they arent open at the moment

Start menu / Control panel / system

Device manager on the left. Are there any items with a yellow exclamation mark next to them??

If other devices can connect it will have nothing to do with your ISP and doubtfully your router. It will be either connection settings on your comp and / or driver issues for your Internet Wired/wireless card.

Cant see it being a problem with drivers if it wont work with either wireless or ethernet, I would guess it's a problem either with the settings on your desktop or an incompatibility issue with your router & windows7,if any of your other computers are using windows7 & working ok the incompatibility theory would be ruled out. would have thought your ISP could be of more help.I would suggest you PM Gorman,I think he is pretty well clued up on the subject.

Hi Thomas,

Do you have another system in the house that you could use to confirm whether this issue is definitely caused by or at least involves your desktop rather than being a router issue?

You may have already been asked to do this by your ISP, but..

Please check your current network settings by doing the following:

1) Right click Network -> Properties. Does your network map show you connected to your router?
2) Select "Manage Network Adapters" on the left, right click your LAN adapter -> properties
3) Select Internet Protocol Version 4 -> properties
4) Make sure "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DPS server automatically" are selected.
5) Under the "Alternative Configuration" tab make sure "Automatic Private IP Address" is selected.
6) Disconnect and reconnect your RJ-45 cable.
7) Start menu -> run -> CMD

Type the following commands one after another

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

after a short while type ipconfig /all to confirm your connection to your router.

If you are connected to your router but still cannot acces sthe internet it is possible that you need to confirm your systems connection with your router.

I do not know which Thompson router model you have so i cannot be a huge help, however after doing ipconfig /all if you look under "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection" heading, the IP of your router will be listed as "DNS Servers". This is usually 192.168.1.1. By typing this into your browser you should be able to enter your routers login page. The login info is typically admin / password until changed, however you may have a specific login name and password written on the underside of your router.

From there you may need to contact Thompson for help :(

I had a similar problem through wireless only with one of my laptops. For some reason I could not connect wirelessly to my TalkTalk router using WPA2/WPA encryption and had to change the router settings to WEP encryption only. This certainly was not a problem with my laptop, but with the combination of laptop and router :/

I find it hard to believe that your ethernet drivers are causing the problem, but if you have not yet attempted to update them please do so.

Daft suggestion, but I had a similar problem with one of my pc's.

The cause was a wireless card coming slightly dislodged in transit. A good firm push with my thumbs fixed it.

Thanks for the replies guys, i have tried everything you have mention here, and i think i know where/what the problem is but i have no idea how to remedy it.

When i type ipconfig/all after 'DNS server' it should say my ip address as it does on my laptop but instead it says:

fec0:0:0:ffff::1x1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2x2
fec0:0:0:ffff::3x3

Even when trying to connect to my router settings through my browser it says unable to connect as if i was accessing a web page.

In network settings map it says my network is an unidentified public network (with the bench symbol)

Any chance it may be a virus? Although my bt netprotectplus (macafee) doesn't find anything.....

My mate is going to burn me some other anti virus to give that a shot.

Also an update for above, the DNS is now listed after 'ipconfig/all'
Still getting the 'unable to contact your DHCP' after 'ipconfig/renew'

Do you have static IP (same IP address each time you connect to net) or dynamic IP? (different IP each time router is started)
Set your connection to static IP. Depending on what connection you use you will need to configure it (If ISP allows Static)

Control Panel - Network and sharing - change adapter settings.
Right click adapter you use, properties
from list select internet protocol version 4 - properties

Use the following IP =
IP address outside your DHCP settings (you will need to find this in your router config page by logging into your router) DHCP Start Address: DHCP End Address
For EG if your DHCP start address is 192.168.1.1 and your end address is set to 192.168.1.200 then configure your IP address as 192.168.1.201

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 (usually automatic)
Default Gateway= 192.168.1.1 (or whatever IP the router uses) **can find by opening cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all

Use the following DNS =
Preferred DNS server:
Alternate DNS server:

Above are your ISP preferred DNS. You can again find these by logging into your router or google the name of your ISP and preferred DNS settings and you should find it easy enough

Then you'll probably have to restart the router and sometimes the PC, too (usually just the router).

If you do the same for wireless, use a different IP address then you set as wired.

Sorry, my computer classes my connection as an 'unidentified network'

Had this exact issue on a freinds laptop no matter what we did it would keep saying "identifing" for an age then it would just say "unidentified network" , so the pc is in fact connecting to the router , but no internet access at all & this was the same in wireless or wired , tried re-installing network adapter drivers (after uninstall & full registry clean) , did this 4 or 5 times to no avail - in the end we gave in & re-installed windows form his recovery partition & it has worked fine ever since - never did figure out the cause of it. a bit extreeme but nothing else worked for us.

I think i have tried everything, system restores, every setting possible haha. So im going to get some different anti virus from a friend to see if that works, if not would you suggest a full system wipe and reinstallation? I will need instructions on how to do so if i need to though :p haha

I would see if someone who is more experienced than me with connection issues can help you first - im just a bit lazy , if anything goes wrong with my windows i just re-install for a passtime ( well if i think a virus has made it through at leased ) , gives me something to do you see ( i have not had any issues with connections myself , well only at the IP provider end ) - i just plug in the ethernet & set up a static ip for the pc & thats it - i know that wireless is a real pain on vista & 7 , but i just got my telephone company to move the main line to my room ( better than an extention cables , no loss , better speed - well it was in my case , got a whole meg & a half extra ) so i could do everything wired - i just prefer the security of wired , i just simply turn off the wireless in my router settings.

& yes you will lose the lot with a re-install ( unless you back it up before re-install) - but yes its starting from scratch basically.

Dont suppose you have done a router firmware upgrade have you recently ? - only ask as i did one once on an netgear router & it rendered it useless for some reason ( & yes all the settings were backed up before & re-installed afterwards) , but it would in fact connect to my IP but not to any devices at all , pc , ps3 , xbox 360 & my tv - just had to buy another one & now i treat it like a bios upgrade & never do it unless its to solve an issue. ( & i have never had to do either of them router or bios for what its worth)

Did you get a setup disk with your ip provider ? ( they usually come with the router ) - if so maybe its worth re doing the setup , all you should have to do is run the disk & put in your provider & your login & password & the disks software wil configure it all for you - it could be just that for whatever reason the settings in the router have been corrupted i had it once with cod 5 when it did its usual & locked up everything & no amounts of router unplugs & recycling would sort it out , but when i did this it was all sorted out completely .

Im grabbing at straws here but it might be worth a try . - possibly the router has malfuntioned , i have had this before , but im lucky enough to have 2 or 3 other routers here all configured to my IP provider so when it happened i just put one of these on & discovered it was a broken router - its definately a possiblility , they dont last forever , contrary to popular belief.

What is the exact model of your network card?
Start
mmc devmgmt.msc

Look under Network cards
Right click yours select properties ~ Details tab

Look for hardware ID and let me know what it is. (I know you cant get wired or wireless but its easier to start with wired)

1. Click on Start button.
2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
4. Type netsh int ip reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
5. Restart the computer.

What kind of connection have you.
Try 2 different settings...

Start
mmc devmgmt.msc

Right click your network card ~ Properties ~ Advanced Tab

Here you are looking for Link Speed

If your net connection is High (approx 20mbps or more) try 1Gbps full Duplex
If your Net connection is Low Use (approx 1Mb-20mbps) 100Mbps Full Duplex

Restart and try

Using an Ethernet cable connected directly to your Router and opening a web page

type in your Default Gateway= 192.168.1.1 or maybe 192.168.1.254 (or whatever IP the router uses) **can find by opening cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all on any computer connected to your router

so no www. needed or anything else, just the Router IP

and then logging into your router. Can you get to this part???

Edit:
Just saw above posts. A full format will wipe EVERYTHING. you will need to reinstall operating system, All drivers, and software. I doubt its a virus, but if it is you could remove what ever anti Virus you have now from control panel programs and features and download and install AVAST Free I find it very good. But I would have my suspicions as to it being a virus problem.

I have tried all of that and its not working, when i try to access my router settings my browser acts like i am trying to access a web page and tells me that its unavailable.

Baron, it is only my desktop that is not connecting, 3 laptops, several blackberrys and iphones plus games consoles can all connect to the internet. So it will not be a problem with the router or anything but thanks for the info.

You can log into your router from ANY computer connected to the network.

Once in your router config, depending on your router, you may need to change your settings to allow your new network to passthrough.
