Laptop randomly overheats (VERY hot) after being idle for an hour or two

Hi, I've been having this issue and I'm wondering if anyone knows a solution. Every now and then I leave the laptop just idling for a while, maybe an hour or two, and when I return I get surprised by how hot the laptop is. The first time this happened it literally hurt my hand to place it on the keyboard and I could smell hot plastic from the vents. The power light indicated that the laptop was perhaps in sleep mode but I was unable to turn it back on so I had to force power it down (this is a seperate issue with the laptop where it sometimes goes to sleep(?) and then is unable to wake up again).

This has happened on two occasions so far, the first time the charger was plugged in and battery at 100%, the second occasion the charger was unplugged. So I don't think its an issue with the charger. I suspect what contributed to the overheating was that the fans weren't on at all. The fans usually stay on all the time during use, and then come on every now and then during sleep mode. But here they were completely off. Maybe when the laptop falls asleep sometimes the fans stop working or something? I've never encountered overheating like this before with another device.

When was the last time you serviced it, like had the back off, dusted it out and repasted it

I haven't opened it up since I got it, so its been 13 months. I'm not sure if it voids the warranty to do so. I keep the laptop extremely clean and in well ventilated rooms, so I doubt there been much dust buildup so far. The fans cool the laptop well under normal circumstances so I'm not sure what's causing this issue...

It’s a normal part of laptop maintenance to repaste it once a year otherwise it will overheat. It’s not necessarily dust built up but degradation of thermal paste

it doesn’t affect warranty as per 7.7 https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/terms/

The first thing to do is check thermals under load (with prime95 and Furmark)

There may be a further issue after this with CPU over provisioning in idle related to a virus or something, but the first thing you need to do is verify temps are within limits
