LG CH10LS20 Multi Blue Blu-Ray Player isn't playing Blu Ray Discs???

Hi everyone,

Have had my new PC from PCSpecialist for about 3 weeks now and have found it absolutely faultless apart from the irritation about the internal Blu-Ray Drive (Make and model in the subject) not being able to play Blu-Ray Discs since I've had it.

I am currently using PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II (Fully Licensed Version) as the software to play my Blu-Ray collection via my PC but it seems not to be able to recognise only Blu-Ray Discs while DVD's and CD are fine!

I logged a call with Cyberlink who produce the PowerDVD Software so that I can attempt to eliminate probable causes and sent them various files and configuration settings of my PC setup.. After going backwards and forwards with them a couple of times the last response from Cyberlink Technical Support was this....

"Dear Breada,

Thank you for writing back.

I understand that you are facing issues while playing Blu-ray while working on PowerDVD 10 software.

Breada, in regards to your concern, I would like to recommend you to contact your computer manufacturer as you computer Blu-ray drive is not detected by the software. Hence, you probably need to update the firmware on it. However, for the best information about this, I would like to recommend you to contact your computer manufacturer.

I sincerely regret for your inconvenience"

The big problem with this response is that I have tried to search for downloadable updated firmware for this LG CH10LS20 Blu-Ray Drive but none seem to exist?

Is there something that I'm missing here as surely testing that Blu-Ray discs work in my PC was something that should've been done as part of PCSpecialists QA Process before the unit was shipped to me no??

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Many Thanks

Hi Breada, sounds like an odd problem.

Are there any error messages related to trying blu ray disks or does it just not recognise the disk in the drive?

i presume there are no problems with your monitor etc being HDCP compliant?

Playing blu ray discs is not part of the tests we run, so it could be a plain faulty drive.

Afternoon Gorman, Many Thanks for your reply...

My Display device is as follows... I believe this is Fully HDCP compliant

Brand: LG
Model: M2380D FULL HD LED TV/Monitor Resolution up to 1980 x 1080

Cyberlink has a hardware compatibility tool called BD & 3D Advisor which identifies if the components within your PC are compatible with their PowerDVD Software. When I run this tool it passes everything with flying colours with the exception of the Optical Drive which it states as "Unable to find Blu-Ray compatible reader device" or something to that effect... Suspicious!!!

One thing I did notice when I first came to using the optical drive for the first time was that when loading a PC/DVD game it sounded very clunky for the first 5 mins of reading the files on the disc and then resumed as I would normally expect a drive to read the files on a disc!! At the time I just didn't think much of it as it didn't display any errors as such or fail to install the software as It was intended to load onto the HDD's...

You could be right, it appears the drive may have a fault within it's Blu-Ray playing feature but is still able to function within reason for DVD's & CD's!
There's nothing that could have been missed within the motherboard or Bios settings or anything like that which makes the drive recognisable as a Blu-Ray player etc...

How should we proceed with this issue? Do I need to contact your Tech Support Desk?

Thanks Gorman.

The broken drive theory still holds water as there are different lasers for blu-ray and dvd etc.

Yes, give us a call on 0844 499 4000, worst case scenario we have to send a new drive to fit, easy peasy.
