Man cave in Progress! (Pics to come!)

Hello folks,

As I have just wrote half of the thread out to find the site logged me out and didn't save what I wrote I shall have to start from scratch! Doh! But I thought this would be of interest to some people!

So anyway, I've not posted on here for a while the last time being asking about specs for a 3k computer as I am looking for a new system, I shall be getting it ordered ASAP but as no one probably knows (or cares :p) But I started a new job at the start of this month on a months trial as I work in a transport office on a nice little cushy £18k a year. Last year I was on a mission to get everything from my computer (which I got!) and to make my room into a man cave, but sadly I didn't even get off of first base with this due to things getting in the way both financially and personally but now thankfully I do not have this problem anymore and can get back on track with creating the 'ultimate' man cave....or at least what I believe to be the ultimate in man caves!

I shall be keeping a picture diary of the progress as I know how you all love pictures of both computers and setups! Well my control centre/room will be my setup! So in total I have calculated the costs for doing up my room to between £2-3000 but as we all know budgets can go flying out of the window and impulse buying can be a pain should you end up doing this! So I shall list everything that shall be done to my room so you all can somewhat know what will be happening and 2 so I can keep a track myself of what the progress is like, after all I'm the sort of person to not notice something until I've told someone!

  • So I'll start with the decorating as this is either for some the best or worst part of doing up a room. I'm going with a black and white 'theme' as I like colour but I like to be basic and don't like to overdo things with colour...does that make me weird? I hope not :D! So decorating regarding the paint for the walls and skirting boards is costing in the region of £80-120 As I want the walls/ceiling to be a bright white whilst the skirting boards shall be getting painted black.

  • The next thing to be done is changing the infamous 50's style carpet that I've been ribbed to shreds on here for on numerous occasions :p for this I will be going to United Carpets & Beds for as their prices seemed to have beaten everyone else's along with them being more than helpful in my questions. This shall be either a dark red or a dark blue carpet which is of quite high quality including fitting & underlay around £150-200

  • Once decorating and carpet has been fitted, done and completed my furniture shall be ordered from Ikea, being my bed, wardrobe, office chair, desk (Which I already have...but to add anyway) And maybe some drawers for someone to sit on or a tv to sit on. The bed shall also be a loft bed as my room is tiny and a loft bed would create around 40% more space so it works. Not sure why but I love the products from ikea and it seems everything I've bought from there has lasted so, I reckon to just stick with what you know :) This ranging from £800 - £1000

So of course this is all the basic stuff and probably all thinking 'Well that's okay but what about the technology....that's what we're here for dude!!' So I thought I would add the things I will be getting over the time for my room to make it a little bit more 'comfortable' to me! After all it will be like my 'headquaters' which of course is always cool! Some of this stuff may obviously not be necessary but to me it'll make that little difference.

  • The TV being one of the most important decisions as I don't want something too big nor too little, so the tv should be between 32 - 42 inches which I'm looking between £3-500 for. Whether I have it fitted to the wall is another question, but I don't think I will though. As it'll probably go on the drawers or something!

  • The games console being the big decider as much as I love pc gaming, I've always been a console gamer and probably always will be. And with the next gen consoles being released I shall be buying the Playstation 4! As with the release of watch dogs I reckon the PS4 will be the best console to play it on and also I've always been more into the Gran Turismo games over the Forza series! And with the release price being at £300....I reckon it will go up £100...so am preparing for the sudden hike in the price.

  • A mini fridge is a must for any man cave, a cold beer whilst killing zombies on dead rising 2 with a mate of mine was perhaps the best time of my life. Or one of the best times! Funniest at least! Picking one up with a lock (So nobody can take what's mine!) for around £150-200 as it's always handy to have!!

  • A lock safe is perhaps something not needed, but as I live in a pretty rubbish town filled with criminals it's always best to have a place to store extra valuables away so they don't get nicked! This being around £130

  • The game peripherals of course such as the steering wheel for the truck sims (I have the logitech gt force pro...great wheel for £100 a bargain at least!) It's just nice to have this as I do tend to use controllers when playing some games such as bully scholarship edition and sleeping dogs!
  • Last but not least the computer which will be my piece of resistance of course! I can't give an exact spec but I'll copy a rough idea of what I shall be getting! As it shall be for photography, gaming, video editing/publishing so I reckon this would be a beast of a machine for me to have going!

So here you have it guys and gals, my plan for the next coming months over the next year and I can probably assume some of it is maybe overkill but having no ties or financial issues to worry about I just have to say 'why not!?' and as I live with my parents the rents not too expensive either...although I sense it may go up along with the electricity bill lol :D But I'm in a job I love, earning money which is rightfully my own and well it'll be cool to have a place I can relax chill out and do my thing....Plus I'll hope to be the envy of all my friends :p I can hope at least!

Stay tuned for the updates! I get paid in 2 weeks so gutting out of the room will commence in about a week or so!

Cheers

I'd probably get better monitors considering how much you are spending.

May I know your field of work? I think I am being exploited in mine, no budget for a man cave :(

I already have a 21.5inch AOC monitor as that's the only size big enough to fit on my desk, although I may just use the one i have as a screen for uptop or something. Think the iiyama screens would be alright though. Would just change the last 2 drives to the caviar green 3tb :) Save some money either way.

Still not sure if to just get 2 aoc monitors instead of 3 iiyama monitors as I found the AOC monitors to be really good to be fair!

If money is not an issue go for it :)
but the motherboard and cpu cooler seems overkill for your spec, cheaper motherboard will do the job without any loss in performance and without overclocking your cpu no need for an hydro cooler.

To be honest the only reason I went for the liquid cooler is because if it's anything like the cool it liquid cooler the noise would be at a minimum. Not so sure if it's the case with these coolers though! And to be honest it's more for looks wise than anything, also if I was to go for the sabretooth motherboard like I did with my last build, not taking anything from it because they're top quality boards but it is a little bit cheaper too to go with overkill!

Not too sure if it would be worth the extra money if i was to add a soundcard.

I think the triple copper heatpipe will be less noisy but you could confirm it with PCS.
they're top quality boards
They are indeed but imo if you are not taking advantage of the additional features you could consider a different one. It has a better onboard audio than other board.

I'm going to have a think about the monitors though, as I've owned the AOC monitors and know they are really good for the price. But it's something I'll have a think about nearer the time to ordering. (A few months all being well!) But pics shall be uploaded :) Of both the room and my setup. Hopefully people will approve of my taste of furniture && carpet :p Lol

Instead of getting all those drives in the PC just got for the SSD and a storage drive and then get a NAS later.. Better for streaming to the PS4 later as well.

Cheers folks, I will have a think about the monitors as to whether I'll buy 2 AOC monitors to go with the first one or buy 3 iiyama monitors. Purely for my own self reasons but i've plenty of time to think about it!

I'll probably end up getting a 3tb caviar green for the storage hard drive and get a bigger SSD (240gb) As I know when doing video the files can get quite big so it will be good to have a big enough hdd to store a few videos at a time before having to delete. Also when editing pictures, again the files can get quite big.

As for the carpet :p I think we're both agreed anything is better at the moment, but I shall be decorating first. I'll mind to take pictures before i do decorating. To give a bigger picture on how small my room is, and how much stuff you can get in there when using a bit of creativity :D

So it's been over a month now just about before I started my quest to creating my man cave and essentially doing a step by step run through of the progress of me getting the job done! The project itself to be fair, I've been putting off for a little while now as I've had a few things to deal with at home, but they say once you get started you won't stop until it's done so well I started the project going a few days ago, and well quite a bit of progress has been made to be fair (although I had the decorating stuff well prepared!)

Decorating, love it or hate it the room needed one and well for this I decided a black and white theme for the walls would be cool to have as I've never really decorated anything or chosen colours to paint my room (Well I have but....not having the full choices I wanted to make...the joys of being classed as an 'adult' and 'grown up' now!) so Black and white being one of the easiest things to do (or so i thought :oops: ) A quick trip to B&Q saw me leaving with about £80 less in my wallet, with Dulex Matt Brilliant White Emultion (10L for about £20) and the 2L Crown Black gloss paint costing roughly the same! and the other bits and bobs needed for decorating including some masking tape....although you will soon see further down I didn't use it for the skirting boards as urm to cut long story short.....I didn't like the colour of my carpet too much....

I must say before I started my room it was in a bit of a state and I never really put much time and effort into it....but well many things are changing not just my room....this just happens to be one of those things helping me get there. So here are some pics of what my room used to be like...and maybe you will see just how small it is! Haha.

9437186301_335165ef22_c.jpg

9437177673_13ba6cca2f_c.jpg

Now to start operation 'clean & decorate'....time to see how far we can get and how well we can do it....thankfully the cleaning literally took half an hour to an hour at most as most of the stuff either got binned or just packed away in a storage box ready for when the room is done, decorated and ready for stuff to go back in.

9437147405_962ab94301_c.jpg

9437137169_eed8d66f7b_c.jpg

Once the clean up was done it was time to crack open the white paint and get on with painting the walls, as we all know I am getting rid of the infamous 50's style carpet getting paint or anything on it didn't really matter too me....although it would've been a better idea to lift the carpet and get it binned first haha!

9437071381_36a7734a78_c.jpg

I must apologize as I didn't get as many pics as the 'painting in progress' as I'd of liked but I was in the mind frame of just wanting to get it done but I did manage to get a pic once it was more or less completed, it was just a case of letting it dry and doing the details. Now the fun part would begin in trying to detail the skirting boards, and this being what the masking tape was for to keep the black paint off of the walls which on the most part worked. But due to a little 'miss hap' didn't work out as perfectly as I tried to get it!

9439849180_c4970499ac_c.jpg

9439820614_ea300bcce9_c.jpg

9437046819_ed573b4210_c.jpg

9439835946_9b95d16e2d_c.jpg

9437060639_ec51ea0141_c.jpg

Well I never did like the carpet anyway.....

9439807420_dc57755d43_c.jpg

I thought it would be a good idea to paint the skirting boards going around pulling the carpet up going along....Got to the first corner not thinking twice about where the tin of paint was and then BAM.....next thing I know I feel my foot sticking a little and my elbow a glossy black....followed by a few choice words I decided to not 'waste' the paint and just carry on painting using the paint that dropped on the carpet (Near on half the tin.....OOPS;) ) so I more or less rushed 3/4 of the skirting boards to try get it done and get the paint cleaned up asap. So I did well to not get that much paint on the walls!

All that will be next on the 'decorating' list is to paint the ceiling then it should be done. The carpet will be ordered in a week or 2 after I get paid and maybe the new bed also. But as you can see things are taking shape quite well and looking a lot better. Only a few more bits to order in and to make it more homely then I can start adding the personal touches to make it my own.

So I hope you enjoyed the 'update' and hopefully you'll stay tuned for the next installment :)

Cheers

Jonny

Thanks for the photos. I think the room looks much better in white than the original blue colour. The carpet is indeed hideous (I think the paint spilling may have actually improved it a bit...)

Very welcome mate :)! Better to keep people posted with pictures better than explaining with words! After all people can talk a good game but what actually happens is two different things....and to be fair even though my room is tiny (Having the carpet measured it's 2.6m x 2.4m) the blue did make it feel cramped but the white....makes my room seem massive...which I don't know how lol! But the carpet has been priced up today, including fitting, the grippy bits, the underlay all come down to a tidy sum of £115! Very nice if I do say so myself. Then the next thing will be the loft bed :) As I reckon the loft bed will help create more space as opposed to a normal single bed....Plus I can have under the bed as a little den!

Things to check off my list for my room at the moment...

Bed
Waredrobe
Drawers
Shelved cabinet with slidy window things
PC...
Office chair
mini fridge
32 - 39inch tv (Not decided what I'm getting of those yet!)
PS4....Sorry but the Watch Dog trailers for the PS4 look imense!
And maybe a little portable tv to be mounted in the sleeping area :) But that's undecided yet.
Also I'm thinking a subscription to Virgin media or Sky...but that again is undecided as I doubt I would watch much tv!

And of course some wall decor both pictures and posters and whatever else I can get my hands on :)

And the colour of the carpet is a nice bright red! Not too bright though, very nice feel to it also :). I know it may seem extreme but to be honest, if I'm gonna make it a man cave I should do it right!

Cheers

Jonny :)

Well the carpet has turned up and has been fitted...much better improvement over the 50's style carpet :p Although now it looks like something out of an austin powers movie at the moment which is cool enough for me! :D
