You're right that freesync only works with AMD and Gsync only works with Nvidia. However even with a freesync monitor and Nvidia GPU you still get the high refresh rate. Gsync monitors are vastly more expensive at this end of the price range. I think the cheapest I've seen is ~£350, with many over £400.

They're fine, just another brand. Most brands have models aimed at a range of price points. I'd consider the merits of the specific model rather than the brand.

can i ask refresher on what a TN panel is compared to a IPS?

TN tends to have faster response time. IPS can have better colours and viewing angles. You won't find a cheap high refresh rate IPS panel though - and indeed at 1080p I think all 144hz monitors are TN rather than IPS.
