mobile vs non mobile gpus

Well, since I have been posting on herr it has pretty much all been about the laptop i was going to buy, now I have been convincing myself and the other half that a new tower is the way to go. My query though, to justify to myself and her is the differences between laptop and desktop gpus.

Obviously desktops pack way more power, and have read the 580m is about on par with the desktop 560. I have tried googling comparisons as have been using notebook check up to now but couldn't find any solid figures to work with.

Just realised I posted in the wrong section. That's what i get for trying to do it on the sly at work :p

if it's figures you're after then try http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php to compare different cards

generally i'd say you will get more bang for your buck with a desktop and of course you should be able to upgrade more easily in the future, perhaps by adding another graphics card (don't skimp on a PSU now) but it's not so easy to move a desktop into the lounge and use it on your lap.

Mobility would be nice and the missus would prefer my old desktop out the bedroom, but not sure if UK gonna have the £1500 to spend on a lappy now without waiting months, and could buy a similar spec desktop for a lot less, hence me query about cards. If a 560 is like a 580m then I could get a similar spec for about 800 I Reakon, nearly half price :p

If i remember rightly i looked this up a while back for someone asking a similar question. I think the 580m was somewhere near 30% slower than a 560 on the benchmarks i found. I remember you had to get the 6990m to get somehwere near the 560.

Much much better value with a desktop thats for sure.

Just think im gonna forget all about the laptop, only really wanted one to keep her quiet and game downstairs but reakon I will still get moaned at, so might as well get a decent PC. A Lappy would be nice, but am now thinking GTX570 :)

Yeah the gtx 570 is a good choice, as is the 560ti 448core, only just behind the 570.

Do you need monitor, keyboard and mouse etc?

Na, got a 22" samsung monitor that will do me for now, was looking at about £1500 when I was going to get a lappy, but the other half will probably want me to spend less as buying another desktop, so the closer I can get it to £1000 the better :)

£1000 will be good, although probably won't quite get a 570, you can always get a cheap laptop afterwards like i said, either one just for browsing or perhaps a 540m for light gaming

I played about in editor and got a build for about £1200 with a 570, but have done no research on towers as was def gonna get a lappy til last night.
Will post it in the correct place shortly now I am a bit more awake :p

Yes wozza you are right, i had it in my head that the 6990m was faster than the 580m for some unknown reason. Just spent the last 10 minutes looking for it and found it again, hard to say exactly because of different hardware in the laptops vs the desktops, but it is slower than the 560 by the looks of it.

Since the OP has decided to go for a desktop it's all good anyway.
