Motherboard for 2 gpus

Hi,

I'm currently looking at desktop build with a 20gb Nvidia a4500 GPU. I would like in the not too distant future add a second a4500 using SLI. what motherboard would be required for this. I'm a bit confused as to if the motherboard has the required ports, wether they would physically fit as looking into SLI it seems they have to be up close etc..

Appreciate any advice or help

Can you post up the spec of the build you're looking at just now? Always best to give advice across the whole system rather than individual components, everything needs to work in unison to get the best out of it.

What's the budget and what software are you using that makes use of dual GPUs?

Intel core i7 16-core processor i7-13700F

Asus ROG strix z790-F gaming WiFi(ddr5, lga1700. Usb 3.2, pcie 5) argb ready

32gb Corsair vengeance DDR 5 4800mhz (2*16)

20gb pny quadtro rtx a4500 gddr6 7168 cuda cores - 4 X dp

Budget is around 2500.

Will be used for parallel programming in cuda, crunching large datasets etc, visual effects programming and a bit of gaming

Have you considered using an RTX card? The likes of the 4080 has more CUDA cores. Is it straight up processing grunt that's required with CUDA or are there accuracy advantages with QUADRO that you're aware of? Quadro is going to be next to useless for gaming to be honest. You won't get any good use out of it in that regard. The RTX would have a bit less VRAM but i's not exactly earth shattering at 20gb vs 16gb.

There are a huge number of things to change with that build. It's not well configured at all so I think you're definitely in the right place.

Thanks for the reply.

I was looking at the quadro because of the bigger bus width and the lower power consumption. Not deal breakers, just things I was considering..

I admit, I am terrible with choosing hardware, I normally just hide away and write software.

The gaming requirement is pretty much for batman games/VR for the teenager.

I don't think the bus width will make too much odds as the performance of the 4500 even with the 320bit bus is less than the 4080 with 256. The 4090 has 384 and is significantly more powerful, but would take you over budget I imagine.

I would probably recommend the single GPU solution. The reason being you would struggle to get 2 larger GPUs into a rig to begin with. They're pretty large nowadays. If you were to opt for something like the 4090 I think this would have you covered from a performance perspective.

Sticking with the budget and current plan though I don't think you could fit anything past 2 4080s without a riser or something like that. You'll need a monster case in play as well with good airflow and many other considerations.

Scratch the budget. I can't get close to it unfortunately. I think you are under-estimating the budget required to hit your target usage. This is me considering dual GPUs over time and having the rest of the system ready to support.
