My HDD failed after 1 month. Just a few questions

Hi there,

Ive had my PC for about a month and yesterday my 2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2003FZEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm) failed and started clicking and is now not showing up in My Computer.

PC Specialist are sending me out a replacement next week, but I just wanted to ask a few questions.

First of all, im running my games from the HDD with the OS on the SSD. When it failed, i opened up the case and noticed the HDD was very hot.

Can someone tell me if this is normal if running games on this drive. Note: I was playing Divinity Original Sin.

Ive got a 250GB SSD with the OS installed so not a huge amount of space for games which is why im running them from the HDD.

Is it worth running the games from the SSD instead or will not make a difference to the temperature of the drive?

Thanks

It is not normal for the drive to run very hot. Optimal operating temps are about 35-45 degrees.
It could be possible that heat caused the drive to fail.
When your new drive arrives, run this program (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) and post the temperatures of the drive on the forum.
That way we can diagnose whether this was a heat related problem.
It's very uncommon for a black series drive to fail.

So long as the new drive is not faulty you will be fine storing your games on the black drive. That is what they are commonly used for.

Thanks, I will do that.

The GPU temps for my GTX 780ti when playing Divinity Original Sin were about 57 degrees with the fans running at 73%. The game is running in 60FPS

Hard drives usually will not reach extreme temps, regardless of how much you use them, unless you have no or very poor airflow in your case. To give you an example these are temps I am getting after few hours on Diablo 3 ... during a very, very hot day. I think it was like 27C in my room! I bet your drive got very hot as it was failing already and it made it to heat even more somehow. Having said that was last week recovering a failed RAID 5 array and one of the drives got so hot I couldn't touch it ... that was the faulty drive by the way. Never seen anything like that.

... also you can check if your drive is faulty by downloading free version of "HDtune" and run a quick check. (mind you there is a paid version there, so download the free one).

kek, forgot to upload picture so there it is...

Thanks guys. I installed both programs you suggested. The drive is indeed dead as its not even showing up as a drive and the error scan is all red damaged sectors. I assumed that anyway.

It may have died due to heat, didnt check temps at the time. In that case how can i improve airflow to the machine? By the way, its been very hot here recently and my room is quite hot even thougn i have door and window open.
