I was wondering what people had got out of the above set up with overclocking. I have this set up and at the moment have no intention of overclocking it as it copes easily with anything I throw at it. More for future reference.
I agree with you, with the spec you have there is absolutely no need to overclock your PC! However, for your reference we sell the i7-990X @ 4.2GHz on our overclocked PCs.
I just checked my core temperatures with Prime 95. All my settings are default and the maximum core temperature after 20 minutes was 75°C. That is about as high as I would like to take the temperature. How could I overclock this and get reasonable temperatures as I didn't expect such high temperatures with standard settings.
So you are saying if I chose to overclock and could sustain a temperature of 90°C under full load then that would be acceptable? How do PC Specialist clock their 4.2GHz PC's? They must have a benchmark and tweak it from there to stabilise it. What is the benchmark they use for 990x on a P6X58D-E (my spec)?
We apply the clock and then generally prime it to see what temps we get.
Once we are happy with the clock it goes through the usual testing suite.
A clock that reached 90 on load on an I7 would be acceptable to me sure.
Remember we are talking Intel here and a flagship I7 at that, this is no AMD chip which will fry itself at 70c, its made of the proper stuff and as an x version is the highest rated from any particular batch. It can take a lot of stick heat wise and likes it.
