Why the soundcard?

Are you sure you need that much RAM? Even for 4k editing that's an awful lot.

I would suggest having a scratch drive in M2 format (basic PCS M2 would be fine), doesn't need to be more than about 250Gb and then you'd need to configure your software to use it, but makes an enormous difference.

You'd also need a much better case for such high end components, the Fractal Meshify S2 is a fantastic airflow build and is relatively discrete in looks. I wouldn't go under that.

Also are you sure about RAID? What are your reasons for choosing it? It's not really used these days for many things as if any issue is incorporated into the drive it's immediately replicated across so you lose the data. If it's for backup, a NAS drive would be far better, then you could do revisioned backups. Depends what your uses are though.

I suppose I chose a soundcard because historically onboard sound hasn't been that good. Do you think it is on the Gigabyte board?
I chose the case because I am inclined to have a DVD writer but the only other alternative, the Corsair 750D, seems a bit of a monster ! I don't use the DVD writer very often so maybe I could get the Fractal Case and an external writer?
Point taken re RAM - I wasn't too sure if it would add much benefit having that much - presumably not.
I guess the idea of a 2nd HDD was if one drive failed - I had that happen on my existing PC and was glad I had a mirrored drive available. I do have an external drive fo back up but it's only for library stuff rather than progs etc.
Do you think the Noctura is suffcient cooling. I see lots of pros and cons on air over water etc...so don't really know what is best. What is your opinion?
Thanks for your help

Yes, on board sound these days is superb, give it a try first. If you’re looking for hifi quality sound then a DAC would be better than a soundcard. The soundcards on PCS are specifically gaming soundcards and only really used for very niche gaming setups.

Unfortunately this is the way things are heading, DVD / Blu ray is now considered legacy and a niche requirement so very few cases support internal drives anymore, but the USB ones are excellent and if you don’t use it a lot perhaps an external drive may be a better solution anyway.

I’d suggest starting out with 64Gb which is still masses and see how you get on.

The drives you’ve selected are pro drives normally used in always on datacenter applications, they’re incredibly resilient drives. Rather than RAID, check out a NAS drive (cost a bit but for future proofing and reliability they can’t be beat), they’re just like having your own file server and you transfer over the network and can access them from anywhere in the world. It is just like having your own private cloud server. For data redundancy, convenience, speed and futureproofing they are a very worthwhile investment.

The Noctuas are incredible coolers, certainly the best available air coolers.

You’ll find with air over water, on air you’ll have lower low temps but higher high temps.

With these chips you really have to keep the high temps down otherwise you limit your peak frequency.

Of it were me, I’d go with the H150i Pro.

If it is a DAC that you’re looking for (Digital to Analogue converter, gives really high end studio quality sound), then they range enormously in price.

At the entry level, there’s an American company called Schiit who have a UK Depot, seriously good quality at affordable prices (I have the Lyr 2):

At the higher end you have a UK company called Chord, they make the Chord Dave which is very highly regarded (priced to match):

Hi - Thanks so much for your comments they have been very useful.
Not quite into DAC....yet ! But worth considering for the furutre.
Do you know where I could read more about how a NAS works / how to set it up etc?

For a NAS, you can pick up ready configured ones from places like amazon, but they're really micro PC's and different specs are used for different applications.

I would advise going to a forum on a marketplace like Overclockers as they'll be much more clued up on what setup you'd need for your specific uses.

For some background information, there's a good site here to get you started:

I would personally stick to QNAP, Synology and Buffalo as reputable manufacturers. The thing with a NAS is the hardware is just one part of it, it's the software that really dictates usability and reliability and those 3 invest heavily in the software side of things.

Hi, thanks for this info - most useful, I will enjoy reading them later.

One last question....in my spec I have an SSD for OS and progs and a larger HDD for storage, docs / photos / videos etc.... Would there be any benefit in getting a secondary SSD purely used for video editing - i.e. Video Editing Programmes / rendering / storage etc....say 1 TB ?

Thanks

There wouldn't be any benefit to install the programs to another drive, that would actually reduce performance, it's best to install all programs to the C drive.

But as above, it's very important to ahve a scratch drive which will speed up rendering times significantly, but it doesn't need to be particularly big, between 250Gb and 500Gb. And then you have to configure your software to use it.

OK, so this is what I have ended up with. Two SSD's; one as C drive one as a scratch drive.

Should be OK?

You dont' need the thermal paste as the cooler comees pre applied with high quality paste which is actually better.

Otherwise looks sweet!
