Pc not stable with xmp on. Help!

Hi all,

I will keep this short. Ive been at it for 3 weeks now, researching and trying to get xmp to work.

Gigabyte z690gaming x ddr5.
Corsair vengeance 6000 mhz 32 gb in slot 2 and 4
I7 13700k

I had the base ram same brand that said 4800mhz and swapped them for the 6000.
Turning xmp on the pc will beep 5 times.

Sometimes nothing on the screen and will eventually go to bios saying unsupported hardware configuration. Reset bios.

Other times will post but the vga light will stay on but boot in windows. Restart and then it will be fine. Tasks manager showing 6000mhz.

If im doing a few reboots i get a hit and miss. Either no image or it will boot fine. Cold start always beeps 5 times and acts the same hot or miss.

I turned xmp off and use the manual ddr5 tweaks for 6000mhz. It is showing 6200mhz in task manager but from cold boot it turns on and off quickly then in again. Im sure this is not normal.

Bios is the latest one f28 if i remember correctly.

Thank you all for the help in advance!!

I’m afraid the cooler is nowhere near suitable for the processor, neither is the case or PSU with the gpu. I’m not at all surprised it’s unstable.

But i have no heat issue. No crashes at all. Unless xmp is on. But no crash just wont boot the way its supposed to. If i manually set ram speed to 5600 it works fine.

I used cinebench but usually just gaming on the weekends. Hwinfo for monitoring in the background and msi riva for the overlay in games
And with a cinebench stress what temps are you seeing on the cpu?

Adjusting XMP is overclocking the memory fabric of the CPU as that’s where the memory controller is. This means adjusting core voltages which means increasing wattage and thermals. If your system doesn’t have the overhead to allow for that, you get instability.

You're definitely going to struggle with that cooler. The PSU is very much borderline with that CPU & GPU. If you get a spike it's likely going to CTD or bluescreen.

For your current issue, my best guess is that you haven't updated the motherboard BIOS since receiving the system. There have been many updates for DDR5 stability, which would explain why it's failing for you. If you wish to try updating to resolve the issue you need to contact PCS for permission to install the latest BIOS. Just contact them through email with the BIOS revision number you're looking to install and wait for them to get back to you. This will keep your warranty intact.

To keep your warranty, yes. They test the BIOS revisions as they come out. Any instability or errors caused by the BIOS they will make note of, hence the gated warranty check for users.

I would contact PCS and ask for their advice on which BIOS revision to install. Technically you have invalidated your warranty but I'm sure if you talk to them it can all be sorted out.

Unfortunately i don’t recall the temps. If need be ill run the rest again with the current configuration and report back if that helps. In the current state i turn the pc on, it goes off for a second then Tirn on fine and boots fine. In task manager i see 6200 mhz but the ram speed timing is not cl30 it is cl40 as hwinfo reports. This is with xmp off and manually had ddr5 booster on, low latency on, multiplier 6000.

Is the new RAM you bought on the QVL for the motherboard?
I have just looked but i cant see 32 gb. Only 16gb for my new ram. PCS will look for the bios version but i think ill get nowhere.or am i missing something. Basically it doesn’t support 32gb or is it 16per channel. Also they are cl 30… what rabbit hole am i going. Havent had a desktp in a-decade just gaming laptops

The RAM not being on the QVL doesn't mean it won't work it just means that it's not been tested and verified as stable with that motherboard. However, you're right that there is no 32GB RAM over 5600MHz on the QVL at all, so it may be that your new RAM is not well supported (or stable). In addition, there is a comment at the bottom of the memory QVL for your motherboard that says this...
* When running XMP at DDR5 5000 MHz or higher, the system’s stability depends on the CPU’s capabilities.
It may thus be that your 32GB 6000MHz RAM is not supported by this board/CPU. Your best bet is to ask PCS whether 2x 32GB 6000MHz should be supported on that board with that CPU.

I would be tempted to ask two questions...
  • Do you really need 6000MHz RAM? Particularly since there seems to be a question mark over speeds over 5000MHz on this board.
  • Do you really need 64GB? What evidence do you have that the 32GB you originality bought isn't enough?

To answer to your questions true i think 5000 to 6000 shouldn’t really matter or make a difference. Also yeah 64 is overkill i agree. But i figured to run the ram at is fastest speed since the build is relatively new and make the most of it
