Hey all,

I'm planning to buy my first gaming pc - I'm currently playing on console but there are just some games like Rust, Valheim, GTA 5 (modding), Valorant, CS:GO, BF3, Crysis and so on that I would love to play. The budget I'm aiming for is about £1000-£1300 (I already have a keyboard, mouse and monitor - 1080p 60hz but I'd like to upgrade this to 1080p at 144hz or 4k, depending on what makes more sense).

The current build I have got on pc specialist is this:

Note:
  • From a graphics card point of view I'm not sure if the 1660ti or super are good enough to start of with?
  • Not sure if the motherboard I chose is any good or not?
  • Is the CPU cooling good or is it bad?

So yeah that's my current build which comes in at £1275...obviously not using liquid cooling and sticking to a 1660 could bring this price down which would be nice but I'm keen to hear your expert advice and suggestions to the above build:)

Thanks all!

The current build I have got on pc specialist is this:
  • Case: Coolermaster TD500
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 six core
  • Motherboard: ASUS Prime B550 Plus (happy to get suggestions here as I dont know how good this one is...I'd like to have 4 ram slots in case I ever want to add more)
  • Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (2x8GB)
  • Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB (not sure if its worth it or if I should just stick to the 1660ti or super for now?)
  • Storage device 1: 256GB SSD
  • Storage device 2: 2GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
  • Power supply: Corsair 750W TXm Series
  • Processor cooling: PCS FrostFlow 240 Series RGB Liquid Cooler (not sure if this is overkill or if I should stick to the normal CPU cooling to save some money)
  • 3 Extra case fans - Coolermaster Sickle Flow 120 ARGB
  • Soundcard: Onboard 6 Channel
  • Network card: 10/100/1000 gigabit lan port
  • Wireless network card: Intel AX200
  • OS: Windows 10 Home 64 Bit

So yeah that's my current build which comes in at £1275...obviously not using liquid cooling and sticking to a 1660 could bring this price down which would be nice but I'm keen to hear your expert advice and suggestions to the above build:)

Hi there! Would you be able to post the build following this format? Also make sure you keep the link at the bottom! For your monitor upgrade, would that be included in the budget or do you have a separate budget for that?

Thanks! This is the build I'd go for

For more even airflow, I'd go for the Lian Li case as it has a intake and an exhaust layout as standard. For a gaming build you really want the TUF board so I've gone for that. For storage, with a play of the build, I've managed to get a 1TB SSD for windows, programs and your games and a 2TB HDD for general file storage. I also noticed your SSD was not an M.2, M.2 drives offer significantly faster speeds for a very little increase in price. For PSU, I've upgraded to a fully modular RMx 850, it's a top of the line PSU and will support lots of future upgrades down the road. The stock cooler is fine for the R5 3600, if you wanted a better cooler, we tend to not recommend the PCS coolers as the quality is hit and miss, instead I'd go for the Cooler Master 212 for air cooling or the Cooler Master 240AIO for liquid cooling, but again, it's not needed for the CPU you have. I've removed the anti-virus as it's known to cause issues and the silver warranty is well worth the £5.

For monitors. the 2060 is the ideal card for 1080p 144hz. The two monitors we normally recommend for those specs are the AOC 24G2U and the MSI Optix G241. I believe there's a curved version of the AOC if that's something you'd be interested in. All three can be found for about £200 and would compliment the 2060 nicely. If you wanted 1440p or 4K, you'd have to spend a lot more on a card, and realistically, it wouldn't be fisable in this budget. Although with the 850W PSU, it's a totally viable option down the road.

I feel I've answered your questions but if you have any more, feel free to ask!

Thanks a lot for this, that's really useful!

In terms of the graphics card, would the 1660ti or super make sense at all? Is there much of a benefit compared to the 2060?

The 1660TI is currently out of stock so I'd be looking at the Super. The video below gives a comparison in a number of games at 1080p on the highest settings. The difference seems to be about 20-25 FPS between the 1660S and 2060. For a about £30 in price, personally I feel that's worth it. Also worth noting as you lower the graphics settings the difference between them will only increase.

That’s a good point actually, definitely worth spending a bit more to begin with especially when I can get higher fps.
Thanks a lot!

Hey Junior - me again,

I was about to place the order for the PC but it seems that the Lian case is gone now. Is there a good alternative I can choose for this?

Thanks!

Also, if you can afford the extra outlay.... a separate games drive would be a good quality of life upgrade. Allows you to keep the primary drive free of clutter, as well as numerous other benefits that make life easier.

To be fair it might have to be the TD500 - has plenty of fans already included as well plus I like the looks of it

The TD500 is great I'm just biased and think the 4000D and the 5000D look fantastic. But then that's my own preference shining through.

TD500 is a better option than the 4000D no doubt
