Have you seen the tech demos, that killzone 4/shadow something looks amazing, then again the ps2 tech demos looked better than Pixar films, hopefully this means we'll start seeing better pc games, after the rush of unoptimised multi platform titles,

Probably still get one or uncharted, the last of us and the last guardian

Sony have most certainly listened to their criticisms from the PS3 about it being a difficult console to program, so they've opted for something that developers are already comfortable with and don't require having to learn to program new instructions. This is a massive win in my books and shows that Sony are a little embarrassed with the PS3. The PS3 has been out 7 years and they started working on the PS4 5 years ago? That says a lot for them feeling just a little bit guilty about it.

Anyways grumbling aside, I'm impressed with what they're doing with it, I have a feeling they're still finalizing hardware so there isn't any point in showing something that won't resemble what it will end up looking like. I imagine the big reveal of the "real" console will be at E3, that will give Sony a ton of time to get it mass produced for Crimbo.

Engineering wise, they've certainly thought about it: Lower the amount of heavily used custom chips and go for something a little more off the shelf. I know they will be custom to a point, but they won't be creating completely new chipsets, just modifying current ones. As for adding the GDDR5 as sys RAM is a pretty ballsy move as it's ramp the price up pretty high.

The video streaming was one of the biggest rumors and is certainly one of the things that Sony will be heavily investing in, I see it as a major advantage.

Interesting article from PC Gamer saying that it's going to be equivalent to a £430 gaming rig of today. As much as I'd love to agree with them and feel like my rig is completely free from competition, there's always something about consoles that give them that extra step. It's like it's not about the components they put inside it but more how they use those components. Whether it be because developers focus more on console versions and don't max out a high end gaming rig's potential or not, I still can sit down on my 6 year old Xbox and genuinely enjoy it despite lacking my PC's graphical quality or customisation while playing.

Next-gen consoles are definitely a threat to my rig in my eyes. May have to buy that 2nd 670.

I might be being stupid here but when were recommending specs to people we are always telling them that a Dual Core i5 is sufficient for current gaming market however this beast is coming with an 8 core. I dont get why thats so great, is it dual purposing for something else?

Consoles are quite high in processing power, tri core was very high end at the time of xbox release and is still holding quite strong today, but it is being bottlenecked by the graphics chip and RAM

these will likely be very low clock as well between 1.5-2GHz and won't be used effectively for another 12 months I'd say, so perhaps it can power off those not needed to save energy, One of them will likely be reserved for the operating system to download in the background and run apps and what not

Thanks Wozza,

Was reading some PS4 Fourm fan boys saying how the PS3 had a CPU capable of over 2000 gigaflops, and that PCs were only in the 100s. Dont even know what a FLOP is, sounds like something to do with calculations per second i guess

The PS3 has a cell processor and if programmed right, can be very powerful, not sure about how it compares to a PC though and whether the 2000 number is true

but that is the reason why many people use their PS3s for folding, and also why ports often look worse on the ps3 than xbox, because its difficult to optimise

EDIT: the ps3 processor is capable of 230GFLOPS whilst the i7 980X is at 109GFLOPS, but a PC GPU is much higher than the PS3, high end GPUs are over 1TFLOP

The comment about Watchdogs is an interesting one. There was a claim floating about Twitter it was an emulation played on a PC for the demo. No actual PS4 tech was used to showcase it. Merely an equivalent PC.
