Poor SSD performance

I just got a Kingston ssdNOW V300 60gb today. I've transferred Windows, and ran some benchmarks. Write speed is at just 84mbps, slower than my standard HDD. Read is at a respectable 290mbps though.
How can I improve this? Does it matter that I didn't mount the SSD inside the case? It is just sitting on top of the psu.

Have you connected the SSD to a SATA revision 3.0 (SATA 6 Gbit/s) port on the motherboard?
Sitting the SSD on top of the PSU is not a good idea.

Yes I did.
I just fitted the sata cables again, and reinstalled Windows 8, seems to have solved it. Now I get 320mpbs read and 270mbps write.
I will put the drive into the bay eventually.
