Potential New Laptop

Hi All,

I am really considering pulling the trigger on this, what does everyone think of these specs? I am debating between the AMD Ryzen 5900x or the new Laptop range with i7 12700.

Always been an Intel guy, but I hear the Ryzen's are incredible.

I plan on using this laptop for Cisco Networking labs so I need 64Gb RAM and processor that can handle whatever is thrown at it.

Hi All,

What is everyones experience/preference between the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X or Intel i7 12700 when building a Destian 15" laptop?

I am looking to purchase a Destian 15" laptop, but I am unsure as to what processor to opt for.

Comparing the two, they are extremely similar - so I wanted to gain some insight as to what others think.

@bharvey92 just a side note, depending on your use case and budget there are probably much wiser choices than the Destian.

For my money sticking either a 5900X or 12700 in a 15 inch 1080p DTR with at best a RTX 3070 makes very little sense. Especially as a 1440p 3080 laptop with similar specs will cost a couple of hundred quid less.

This does obviously depend on your use case though.

My use case is mainly work related for IT purposes. I require 64Gb RAM and at least 8 cores. Either of these two made sense due to they have 12 cores - but happy to be told otherwise.

There are not many vendors out there that build reasonably priced 64Gb RAM laptops so hence I am looking at PCS.

Just to add my main purpose is not for gaming - more for work. But a decent graphics card will obviously not hurt :)

Ok so in that case if you are running CPU heavy workloads and that is the most important factor then the Destian probably is not a bad shout for you.

As to whether you should go 12700K or 5900X there is not much in it and your answer probably depends on what your workloads are.

Here is a great video comparing the two.


For me the I7 probably edges it.

I would personally say the 5900x is better value whilst being around the same performance. It also uses about 25% less power so less heat.

That's a gaming laptop so you're spending the bulk of the money on the GPU. Do you need hardware accelerated graphics if it's just for networking labs?

Are you using VMS? If so, how many concurrently and what specs?

Hardware accelerated graphics work be fine.

Only 1 or 2 VM's. Each would VM would probably need 48Gb RAM minimum - so the 64Gb RAM is to future proof it.

Sorry, I misread your comment. The graphics card is really not important. I would play the odd game but nothing that would demand the graphics card.

The VM itself is a network emulator, the more devices you add the more RAM is required. I will build out big labs so the RAM will easily stack up way past 32Gb.
