Dear PCS,

The laptop is so far good and very powerful as expected. But, can you suggest me some settings for running heavy Mechanical CFD softwares. What I am noticing is the CPU is unable to take load when unplugged, but as soon as plugged, it starts roaring and working at high speed, but it worked only one time at high speed, now even I plugged in, it is not taking much load to run solutions and working slowly, could you suggest me some good configuration so that it should work on best performance without getting overclocked 100%.

Thanks !!

kind regards

PCS don't monitor these forums so you know, if you want to talk with them it's best to phone them.

Can you post your full specs?

Their contact number is on the home page at the bottom. That's only if you want to talk with PCS directly.

None of us on the forum work for PCS, we're just tech nerds and customers who want to help people out, but we're more than happy to help you out now if you like?

Dear spydertracks,

Sure, I will call them too, but it would be nice to have some suggestions from you too. Can you please suggest from your side.

Thank you !!

Of course.

The first thing to check is temperatures, I'm almost certain that the CPU will be thermal throttling as it does on that chassis without some tweaking.

But first we need to make sure that the thermal paste is applied correctly.

If you install HWMonitor from here:

The check the temperatures for both CPU and GPU when on idle (ie just on windows desktop) and post them here

Then run your CFD software and keep HWMontor open in the foreground and post the temperature then for both CPU and GPU

Ok, weird, your idle temps are quite high but your cpu under load is actually being utilised about the same but temps are a lot higher, but within reasonable limits.

what software are you using, do you have a link for it?

The software is from SIEMENS, and it's name is Siemens Simcenter. Below is the link from the official Siemens page.

Can you brief me, what is the problem in the laptop?

Kind regards
No idea yet, we need to troubleshoot.

have you run all windows updates?

can you go into task manager and sort by CPU when running CFD and post a screenshot?

can you also go into performance monitor in task manager, go onto the RAM page and post a screenshot (specifically looking for page faults or over resourced RAM)

then can you highlight disk 1 in performance monitor and post a screenshot?

Dear spydertracks,

I just now shutdown laptop and restarted it again. I noticed that the processor is running unnecessarily at a very high speed. On checking in Control Center 2.0, please see the image. the cpu is running at high temperatures, I never noticed this thing before.

But now I will run CFD software and post the specs as said by you very soon now.

One more very weird thing I noticed is that right side fan has stopped working or may be working on very slow speed that I am unable realize its air coming out when I started running solutions of CFD Software ? Is something has gone wrong with this laptop ?

Thanks for the uploads. There’s something odd going on with that, but I can’t work it out.

It’s like the CPU is being throttled, but not by thermal throttling, it’s like there’s a limit placed on it somewhere else but I can’t work it out.

The RAM is fine, not maxed out at all.

the idle temp do seem higher than I would like personally.

the issue is that CPU doesn’t seem to be used above about 50-60 percent and I can’t work out why.

Dear spydertracks,

Then, what is the solution for it, should I contact PCS by phone ?? Is there is any serious problem with it ? Also why the fan stopped suddenly while working CFD solutions ?

I would speak to PCS and point them to this thread. I don’t know what the issue is I’m afraid. I think there is a thermal issue that will need addressing, but there’s some kind of limit happening preventing it from fully utilising the CPU, so it’s not being allowed to reach full temps which I’m fairly sure would thermal throttle.

They need to find out what’s limiting the processor, once you’ve got that sorted, we can help you deal with temps.

Dear Spydertracks,

One thing I would like to address you that, such temperatures are the same from starting and I got this laptop on 10 March 2020 and I used CFD software yesterday only, till then it was normally used but the temperatures were not less than 50 degrees since the unpack.

One more thing, will you ask the PCS ? Or should I ask them for this issue as you have mentioned in your message that you will speak and post on this thread.

Kind regards

Set you power config in Windows to High Performance. It's possible Windows is throttling the CPU when on battery. Alternatively check the CPU performance settings in power options

Dear ubuysa,

Thank you for your message.
I checked the power config. options in advanced power options, its on ''balanced'' mode.
Also, the CPU performance settings are as below shown in image.

Dear spydertrackers,

Just now I have finished meeting on call with one of the specialist at PCS, he did some stress test with prime95 and figured out that the CPU is running normally upto 50-70% usage, but the problem persists with the CFD software, it is unable to utilize CPU power properly which I will consult to the software client.

But can you please help me with the temperatures I am having in the laptop.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Ok, hope that the software vendor can help with that.

Regarding the temps, what we need to do is apply an undervolt to the processor. Are you familiar with overclocking?

An undervolt is not the same as an overclock or underclock, if done properly it won't affect the CPU performance in any way.

With CPU's they're designed to a tolerance range, but each CPU is unique in it's electrical and performance properties.

What we want to do is gently, bit by bit, reduce the voltage applied on the processor by -10mv at a time, then test it and make sure it's still stable. As a kind of ballpark goal, we want to try to get to -100mV. The lower we can go, the less heat the chip will generate, but you don't want to go too far or else it will just fail to power on.

There are various tools you can use to do this, some of the more popular are Intel XTU:

Or you can follow a guide like here:

Remember, do it incrementally. Just because you may see someone else saying they've reached -150mV, that's on THEIR CPU, which has entirely different properties to yours, even if it's the same model.
