Memory Question
Vortex III with Win 7 Professional

When windows runs out of RAM it pages to the disc for vitual RAM

Bearing in mind I will have an SSD drive as my C: drive and a Hybrid Drive as my D: drive and it is best to minimise writes to an SSD should I increase the main RAM to 32 GB (4x 8GB)?

Chassis & Display
Vortex Series: 17.3" Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3720QM (2.60GHz) 6MB

Memory (RAM)
16GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 8GB)

1st Hard Disk
120GB INTEL® 520 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)

2nd Hard Disk
750GB SEAGATE MOMENTUS XT HYBRID, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

Depends on how you use your PC. I have 8GB and an SSD but I've never seen mine go over 50% usage. I would have thought 16GB would be enough even for heavy use.

You can disable that feature:

I don't think you need more than 16gb unless you are using something that requires a lot of memory like CS5

I will be using Photoshop Elements

with only a few, no more than about 4 photos open at one time.

My little brain can't cope with too many windows open simultaneously, even if Window's can.

I don't think Elements is particularly memory hungry so I think 16 GB will be enough then.

Thanks

If you have an SSD, you should disable your swapfile anyway, unless you're using an older program/game that specifically needs one.

I have 16Gb of RAM and a 240Gb SSD. Had my swapfile disabled since the day it came and never run into any problems.

You also need to disable the defrag scheduler, hibernation support and system restore to reduce pointless writes to your SSD.

I wouldn't recommend disabling system restore,it can be a lifesaver.

it may be over the top now...

but when i install windows 10 in a few years it will want 16 Gig for itself.

so i may as well put 2x 8 Gigs in now and leave the space empty for futire upgrades

or look on the bright side maybe windows 10 will only need 15 Gig ;)

By the time you are using Windows 10 I am sure you'll upgrade to the Vortex VI :)

Nah, micro$oft will want to fleece us again soon, win 9 will be out before christma:)

and you are saying you will need more RAM? vista used more ram than windows 7 for me I don't get your point ... if you use lots of applications at the same time then yes you do need lots of RAM if your a casual user and just gamer 8 gig will be just what you need if not more than you need.

i'm talking toung in cheak really.

i will put the maximum sized modules into the two slots and leave teh reaming two slots free in case i want to upgrade in the future.

that was i don't have to throw away smaller memory modules.

i have a drawer full of small memory module i have remved from systems i have upgraded. a bit of a waster really

MS advice is that the pagefile go on the SSD, and shouldn't be disabled (e.g., see http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2009/05/05/support-and-q-a-for-solid-state-drives-and.aspx ).

Also note, if the OP is asking if he should buy more RAM to avoid writing to a pagefile, then disabling the pagefile would be even more reason to have to buy that extra RAM (unless he never uses that much, in which case it's all irrelevant anyway). My suggestion would be leave the pagefile as it is, and stick with 16GB (unless usage is such that you'll often be using more than that).

i was basically saying, if i got more RAM,

then would i be able to disable the pagefile and thus reduce writes to the ssd thus increasing the longevity of the ssd?

Or possible: can i set the pagefile to the D: drive BUT....

as the D: drive is a hybrid drive then do I not face the same issue

OR....

an i worrying unnecessarily?

Good. That's what I shall do. With 16 GB I should be ok then.

i assume it's easy to turn the pagefile off then.
Right click on "computer"/properties/advanced system settings/advanced/
select "settings" under "performance"/advanced/under "virtual memory" select "change"/
untick "automatically manage paging file size for all drives"/select drive/select "no paging file"/Set.

Thanks for that.

i will do that as soon as it arrrives, along with putting a delete button the the toolbar.

why oh why did microsoft remvove the delete buton in win 7 - stange!!!!!
