Reinstall Windows from blank disk

The machine hung when logging in. It showed just the wallpaper with no apps. There was no access to anything. Booted in safe mode using F8 key. Tried to reinstall windows. Tried local image and my recovery CD-ROM. Did not work, I think because everything encrypted by BitLocker (did not ask it to, maybe. A default with Microsoft account). I now have a machine with a completely blank disk.

On power up it says ‘a bootable device has not been detected’. Power up with my rescue usb plugged in gives the same message. Power up holding F8 key gives the American Megatrends v. 2.20.0050 bios (?) screen. What should I do?

Thanks
Peter

Windows 10 home does not come with Bitlocker so was that something you installed yourself afterwards?

When you boot up with the USB stick in are you going into the Bios and changing it to look for the USB stick first?

With USB stick installed and F8 pressed I go directly into the Bios. I created a MS account and subscribed to Office 365. The process was messy. BitLocker was probably installed then though I did not do it deliberately. To reset the PC I needed to type in my recovery code. But the dialog was frozen and it was not possible to do so. Eventually I went into a command window from the recovery dialogs and wiped the disk (clean). This was to be prior to a format. But I could not do that.

BitLocker is not in W10 Home, so you couldn't switch it on...deliberately or otherwise.

You can however, manually enable 'Device Encryption'...

I don't understand your comment that:

Are you saying you were able to create an MS Account and install Office 365 when booted into the BIOS?

On my similar NUC, I press F2 to get into BIOS. F8 takes me to the recovery options.

OK as you have already formatted the drive then its really now about trying to put Windows back on it.

hopefully this will help you:

- Insert USB stick with the Windows install program on it.
- Turn on your machine and press the key to enter Bios - I think you said it was F8 earlier.
- When in BIOS go to Advanced BIOS settings or features (basically we are looking for the bootable menu so it might be different)
- Find "First Boot Device" and select USB
- Save settings and exit/
- If machine did not reboot - turn it back on leaving the USB stick in.

Hopefully this will read the USB stick now and load up the Windows Install.

If you get any errors, it may be worth creating a new Windows bootable USB stick in case this one is corrupted slightly.

No, that was an answer to previous question. Whatever the origin of device encryption I presently have a blank unformatted disk.

I will go and try that.

I changed the boot order so that USB booted first. But it just repeated the No bootable Device found error.

That's either because rhe USB isn't bootable ie hasn't been created properly, or because it's not booted the USB and has defaulted to the next device in the boot menu such as the blank drive

The usb came from PCS, it’s not been used but I think you are right and it’s defective

I would always recreate a new one with the new image from the microsoft site anyway - as this would be more up to date.

Just FYI, this is what I have. I also have an Office 365 account which I am sure provides the encryton - which I shall now turn off!
