Replacement Disk Drive Software Install Issues

Received my replacement disk drive on Friday, installed windows and drivers, had been manually updating when windows update stops working. Red cross shield icon displayed with check for updates button, click button receive following message: Windwos Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

Opened windows task manager and checked on services tab, windows update is running (wuauserv).

Ran a clean re-install of windows and again encountered this problem.

Have used microsofts Fix It tool, it says windows update components must be repaired, click fix yet problem remains.

I would appreciate any help before continuing to install further programs onto the computer.

Also, if I try to change settings for how updates are received (auto etc.) and change settings it states that the publisher is unknown, this cannot be correct as I ahve activated my Windows so not sure what the issue is.

I should probably say I use Norton IS 2011, but I am unsure if this would cause such an issue.

Ran sfc/scannow and found corrupted files that could not be repaired, list to follow in next post. All to do with Windows update I presume. How can it be corrupted already when all I have done is clean install windows, load motherboard drivers, load NIS 2011, Load NVIDIA driver...thats it! I have activated windows, I have tried MS fix it tools, it says it has fixed update components but problem persists, I have tried to download update agent, I get an install error 0x8000ffff. I have experienced this problem twice now after two clean windows installs and I really am not sure how to proceed except clean install again to see where the problem begins. I really need my PC back up and running for work purposes asap so any suggestions would be helpfull.

Ok, so system restored to before any drivers were installed but after critical updates (there were 3 after clean install of windows was completed) were installed. Windows update is available and was still available after all important updates were installed etc. until only recommended updates were left (21 of them). Proceeded to use InstAll from my Asus disk (drivers only) to install motherboard drivers, completed install successfully but now the windows update error is back.

Why is installing my motherboard drivers causing problems with windows update?

I also now have an action center message stating that I should turn on windows defender as this service was stopped.

Why are the mobo drivers corrupting ym registry values for services?

Norton could well be the problem,try disabling before updating.

I have narrowed the problem down to the Mobo driver: Intel Matrix Storage Manager, this appears to cause the problem with windows update and not the other Mobo drivers or other programs. I do have another SATA drive in the tower from an older PC, the reason I mention this is that once the Intel Storage driver is installed it appears to alter windows and after installation runs through both SATA drives and optical drive stating it requires a restart to finish updating as files have been changed, this is when the problem occurs.

I can only think of removing my other SATA drive, clean re-install of windows and then trying to install the Mobo drivers again including the apparent culprit.

Anyone out there experienced or encountered this issue?

Removing my other drive to leave only the new C drive, clean re-installing Windows then installing all Mobo drivers still causes the same issue. The Intel Matrix Storage Driver is playing havoc with windows and the registry affecting both update and defender.

Daft question but is there any way of installing the mobo drivers prior to windows, otherwise how the heck did they get installed originally when I first got the PC from PCS?

I guess since I don't have RAID that I don't need the IMSM driver in the first place (was told over phone just to select InstAllon Asus disk), wish I had lnown this prior to all that. If there is any reason I require this drive please also supply me with the solution to the issues it appears to cause
