USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNISED

Hi Guys I wonder if you can help please.
I have an external USB hard disk connected to my pc I purchased from Pc specialist . the external USB Hard disk was working few days a go. then I disconnected it one day and when I connected its power supply and inserted its USB cable into my pc USB port to use it again, I got a message ''USB device not recognised, the last USB device connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it'' . I tried multiple solutions but did not help. I tried re-installing the driver did not work , it says the best driver is being used, changed cable didn't work, did a trouble shoot search in windows didn't work, updated windows didn't work.

any help or solution please. I have data there in the external USB drive I don't want to loose

may thanks

Can you first post your full spec from the order please?

Is thus a USB3 port or USB2?

Have you run Windows Update to ensure all updates are installed?

Have you tried plugging the drive in before you boot Windows?

If you boot the Windows installation media with the drive plugged in can you see it?

hi thanks for reply
specs in screen shot from PDF document, sorry could not copy and paste from pdf.
yes I have run windows update and the problem still there
I restarted windows plugged the the external hard disk USB and didn't get message this time , but hard disk didn't show up in my pc, looked in device manager and yellow tringle is there saying unknown USB invalid Device descriptor
I don't have windows installation media with me

yeah may be you're right. I will try that, and see how it goes. thanks
Can you let us know how you get on? A friend of mine is a sound engineer and had a load of external hard drives which were exhibiting the same problems, so I dismantled them all and all the drives worked fine, it was just the case that was the issue.

I think they tend to put really poor controllers in the cases, but would love to know if it works for you or not so I can further come to a conclusion, always good to get other peoples experience.

You can pick up 2.5 / 3.5 to USB small cases for as little as a tenner now as well on Amazon. I picked up 2 so I could read my HDDs that came out of my old laptop and now use them as USB drives.

(In case you don’t want to open up or have no room in your machine).

I picked up this one recently for 2.5" SATA Drives, can't recommend enough:

There's also a straight cable so the drive is exposed, but they're very good also:

@SpyderTracks I bought that exact straight cable when I got my system....transferred the data from the Samsung SSD from my old system to the drive in my new one as I didn't want to end up with 2 Windows 10 drives installed as it caused issues on my old system. Worked brilliantly and the speeds were impressive...transferred just under 100GB of data in under 10 minutes!
That's brilliant

I've got one too, they come in so handy for doing quick transfers, brilliant piece of kit and exceptional value! (y)
