Valeon Laptop

Hey all, my laptop is finally falling apart enough to get a new one. Hoping the new one will replace both my laptop and desktop PC as it would be nice to have everything in one place, so to speak.

I used to be a 3D artist by trade so it would be nice if it had high enough specs if I needed to do the odd contract here and there. I am a cognitive scientist now so I the high power activities are data analysis (where the ram is usually my bottleneck). But also I like to game with VR so I need a good gfx card.

So basically it has to do everything 😅

How is it looking?

The only thing I predict people would recommend against is the single 4tb HD rather than two 2tb ones but its annoying spreading things across two hard drives and this gives me the option to get a second 4tb at some point in the future if it ever becomes necessary if hopefully, the laptop lasts me that long.

Also, can any recommend a good USB dock for this laptop for my two external monitors, graphics tablet (I paint), USB audio interface, external USB mouse and keyboard (I also do a bit of music production 😅 .. too many hobbies).

Finally, is it a problem at all that my external monitors are only 1080p? Should I plan for a 2560p in future?

Any other advice is always greatly appreciated.

Right before I start making suggestions what is your budget.

Hey Barlew! I would say I think I am willing to go up to 2,700 MAYBE, but anything above that is probably pushing me too far. Cheers!
OK final question before I get to it. I have no idea about data analysis. Is 64GB of RAM essential or would 32GB work? I wouldn't want to be putting 2666MHz RAM in a high performance laptop especially not one that had an AMD CPU.

I can imagine situations where I would need more than 32 but I imagine also that they are very rare. With upgrades, my desktop PC has lasted about a decade (upgraded gfx, more ram, new power supply since I first bought it). I was thinking about "future-proofing" since laptops are a pain and sometimes impossible to upgrade.

Would you recommend getting 32 of the faster ram then and potentially, if needed in the future, upgrading to 64 of the faster speed if I feel like I need it down the line?

Ok if the 64GB isn't a deal breaker I would absolutely recommend getting 32GB of 3200MHz instead. As you rightly pointed out if down the line you do need 64GB you can source your own 3200MHz set and install it yourself without much difficulty.

As I already stated for VR I would recommend getting a RTX 3080.

I understand what you are saying about it being annoying spreading your data and applications between two 2TB drives but thats not how you should configure your drives anyway. What you need is a drive for your OS, and just your OS and then another drive for your data and applications. This keeps your system running at peak performance. You wont be juggling anything between the two because you will save everything to your secondary drive anyway. So with that in mind I would recommend a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO for your OS and then the 4TB Corsair as your data drive.

I personally would stick with Windows 10 for now as in my opinion Windows 11 is still in its testing phase.

Finally I would add the 1 year dead pixel grantee to your order. Its only £19 quid.

I have put together the following spec:

Chassis & Display
Valeon Series: 17.3" Matte QHD 165Hz sRGB 100% LED Widescreen (2560x1440)

32GB Corsair 3200MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 16GB)

1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3200MB/W)

I think you underestimate how much difficulty I would have, everytime I open up any computer I drop a screw inside and lose it forever and I have been doing this for many years. That being said, awesome fully agree, cheers :)

For some reason, I thought the price difference was much bigger than it actually is.

Ok, that make's sense.

Yup, it was set to Windows 10 but whenever I click back on the config it goes back to 11. Even when I click on yours it is reset to 11. Super annoying.

Can't imagine I would send my laptop in and not have it for weeks over a dead pixel or two but I guess its only a few quid extra.

Thanks for the help! Greatly appreciated!

It'll likely be in pre-production for at least a week or two mate, we all did the refresh the page 47 times a day but it doesn't make it go quicker unfortunately

Just settle in and you'll get an email when it's moved into build. Build to testing to despatch usually takes around 24-48 hours once it starts provided it doesn't run into any issues

On the one hand, this seems rational and reasonable and of course, I should take this on board.

On the other hand, email received literally JUST NOW: "Your order is now being assembled by one of our expert builders."
As proven by empirical experiment, refresh lots and it will make them build it!! :D

It's the power of suggestion, those refreshes obviously connected with one of the staff at PCS who's probably plugged too far into the matrix.
