I will be playing mainly MMO,s (GW2, and Elder Scrolls online in the future) FPS games and Strategy games like Rome 2. I want to be able to play them on max settings. Also I will be using the machine for watching 3D films and playing games in 3D in the future. I will be getting a Corsair Vengeance K75 gaming Keyboard and M95 USB laser gaming Mouse. I've chosen these specs because I'm hoping they will last me 3 years before I have to buy a new machine.

The cpu and motherboard are overkill for what you intend to do. With the same budget I could probably get an i5 + 2 x GTX 780s/GTX 770s that will be much better than the spec you posted. The rampage extreme is more suitable for extreme/enthusiast overclockers (playing with voltages, watercooling, liquid nitrogen....) and won't bring any benefits gaming wise compare to cheaper boards unless you are planning to fit in 3 or 4 GPUs which is also not ideal. 8gb RAM is plenty for gaming, higher memory bandwith won't bring any noticeable improvement either. I would save money from fast track and upgrade other parts of your spec like the secondary drive for a caviar black and at least gold warranty.

Lools like a great build , but if you want it to be real extreeme , then put a bigger psu (1000w) in there & put another GTX-780 in SLI in there

Do this & you will be stamping over every game in ultra settings & 60fps for a very long time indeed

Was going to suggest the I5 as well , but being that you play stratagy games , the I7 could be benificial here ,normally I7s are overkill for games but its a little different when it comes to CPU heavy games like mmorpgs & stratagy games .

Like Keynes said, there are a lot of things that you could cut down on that really isn't necessary for your gaming needs.

I recommend at least upgrading your secondary hard drive to a Caviar Black.

Being that you do play mmorpgs & stratagy games , i would go for the sabertooth build

But if cash is no object then push it to 2X-GTX-780s ,

you can save a lot of cash by ditching the SSD , its not needed , all its going to do is give you slightly quicker boot times & loading times
(They are so overpriced for what they do , they do nothing more than a standard HDD does , just a little bit quicker)
(for the money they cost Gig for GIg id want it to be playing the games for me!! - lol )
(they dont last nearly as long as a standard HDD does either)
But you have gone for Caviar blacks anyways so you dont need to worry about loading times - lol

Save the Cash & put it towards the GTX 780s, an overclock on the processor & maybe a better cooler

im not really in to these liquid coolers so the one you have chosen could be adiquate for an overclock i suppose , id just want the best one available for an overclocked I7.

You see 95% of the time I7s & any kind of overclock is a waste of time & money for gaming , but you do play mmorpgs & stratagy games , so that puts you in the 5% that would benifit from an overclock as these games are very CPU dependant generally

If you can put all this together you wont need another pc for a very long time indeed

I would suggest the i5 with a better cpu cooler and 8gb RAM. I haven't seen benchmarks of total war rome 2 but for Shogun Total War there was no noticeable difference between an i7 and an i5.

I assume you're not actually talking from experience and are just making assumptions based on what you've read on the web? An SSD is potentially one of the best upgrades you can make to a rig nowadays especially when you're spending that sort of money on a build.

Having one for your OS and applications makes a lot of sense.

Reading is one of the best forms of learning people have been doing it for thousands of years & assumtion is the mother of all messups , i dont assume , i do research before i post

all it does is give you better bootups & loading times - fact

By that logic we might as well all go back to dial-up ;)

And while your statement is technically true, until you've used an SSD, you won't have realised how slow a standard HDD actually is for normal windows use.

That's actually not quite true now, in some cases stress tested Samsung 840s and Intel 520s have outlasted a lot of HDDs of various differemt makes. I can't remember figures or for the life of me find the link, but I'll try and find it. The amount of writes to modern SSDs to render it useless would mean constantly writing - deleting - writing again and again to get it to give up in the standard lifespan of an HDD.

I think there are 2 different points being made here. Overall performance and pure graphical gaming performance.

Generally most people go for an SSD for faster boot and load times, especially if your running a rig of the spec the OP wants.

Thats just silly & it seems like your just looking for an argument here , the difference is nowhere near the same as dial up Vs braodband & you know it , its better but not my that kind of silly margin - go off & do some research yourself before coming out with silly examples like that.

Quite possible these days , like anything they can improve

Hey Baron, with your setup an SSD is certainly something you could get that would improve overall performance. God knows theres little room for improvement elsewhere! :tt2:

Thanks , i may get one in the future when the price comes down , its just that these days you can get 2TB for £100 or so & for me the difference in speed between the two is just to small to justify the cost , i think i would like to replace my current HDDs with some caviar blacks , my freind just got one & they are great - i dont know though i do pretty well with the ones i have got , plenty fast enough for me really .

But thank you for the compliment & the suggestion

It was an extreme example yes but you've given advice based on something you've never tried and are only going by what you've read on the internet (I actually thought most articles strongly suggested SSD's nowadays). Why don't you go out and buy an SSD before telling people that they're useless?

I can only speak from personal experience but a month ago by PC was taking anywhere between 5-10 minutes to actually get going using my Caviar Black. And even once it was warmed up it wasn't as snappy as I'd have liked. I bought an SSD as it seemed like the logical thing to do and I fell in love with my PC again. All of a sudden I'm booted up and ready to go after 15-20 seconds, browsing through folders or settings is instant, chrome is speedy and responsive. There is a HUGE change compared to my caviar black.

And at the end of the day, the OP is looking to play things like MMO's, do you really think he's going to see a whole lot of potential from SLI 770's/780's? No, probably not as most MMO's aren't even GPU intensive. But you know what they do have? Lots of loading screens walking into cities or new areas... and you know what helps with loading screens...?
