What video compressor

Ok so I just recorded a video in fraps, 30 seconds long full resolution (5760 * 1080) and its 2.14GB lol, I want to upload to youtube but obviously 2.14GB upload is a no no really. Whats the best free video compression software? The file is in avi format.

PS. Ive already tried Handbrake and it doesnt recognise the file apparently.

Why didnt you go with whatever the 720p ratio would be, difference between 720 and 1080 is usually huge

This is a bit of a strange one, but have you tried Windows Movie Maker (not Live)?

Alternatively, I generally use Camtasia.

Often it's just simple to load the movie into an actual movie making software, and then when the movie is prepared for production, the software makes its own compressive actions.
