Can anyone recommend cost savings I could make?
I don't care what the case looks like but this seemed to have decent cooling and I am hoping might be a bit quieter than some of the cheaper ones.
It is for my daughter to do homework and gaming (Minecraft, SIMs and genshin impact at the moment but likely to change)
Also any advice on how to partition the SSD?

I suggest you give this a read, especially the section on AMD v intel, also where are you getting the OS from

Thanks for the advice. The main reason I went Intel is that the equivalent AMD was more expensive when I tried to build it. Am I missing something? The reason I left Windows off was because it is cheaper to buy a key elsewhere. I am on my phone but will see if I can paste the AMD build I thought was equivalent.

The only other option was the Athlon duel core which was a bit cheaper but I'm guessing is not as good as the Intel.

I think you''re hamstringing your builds here by looking at the "office" configurator tool rather than the proper "gaming desktop" one. Unfortunately the "office" options are often poor and reduce performance significantly.

You have chosen two options with cheap, older CPUs. Both are very decent budget bets; personally I'd agree that, at this price, the 10400F is the best option.

Here's the build I'd recommend for you:

Case
FRACTAL FOCUS G BLACK GAMING CASE (Window) cheap but good

Memory (RAM)

Graphics Card

4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1650 - HDMI
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2200 MB/R, 1500 MB/W) significantly faster than a SATA SSD
Power Supply

CORSAIR 550W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET much superior to the CV series, especially in noise level
Power Cable

1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling

Your other option, on a AMD Ryzen 3600 option, is about £60 more.

The final alternative would be to go for onboard graphics right now with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G and no graphics card. This is a very decent option for games like Minecraft; I'm not sure about the others. You can then opt to upgrade the graphics card later, as you'll have a strong foundation to build on. It would mean reduced performance for now; however it would bring the cost down to around £700.

Of these options, I guess the Intel one would be my choice, though I'd prefer to spend a couple of hundred more...

Be very careful about cheap Windows keys available online. If they are significantly cheaper than PCS or Microsoft, they are almost certainly bogus. They may work for a while, but could be disabled by Microsoft. Also, do you really want to be downloading anything from a website that sells dodgy goods? Who knows what else you might be getting unawares.

Absolutely: future-proof at this price point really means having the solid foundations that would allow future upgrades. What we don't want is to skimp out on stuff that would make the computer a paperweight in two years' time. That means solid case and power supply options. I'd probably alter one thing about the build I suggested and put a half-way decent cooler on it, such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 or the PCS Frostflow 100.

In all honesty if you are trying to get gaming and office apps (school work) at a budget lower than £1000 it’s difficult. I don’t normally say this but for the gaming a second hand console (ie not the latest PS or xBox) and then a budget office laptop (again maybe secondhand) might be your best options.

(This is of course my own personal opinion here)

120mm AIO liquid coolers have never been a very effective way of cooling. For the same cash I'd recommend the Cooler Master 212 Black Edition, it's a solid little cooler and will do plenty on the 10400F. Or for a bit of saving the FrostFlow100 will do the job just fine too.

Otherwise, looks solid (y)

I made the chage you suggested to the cooler but also used some christmas money to upgrade the gpu to the AMD RX 6600. I also upgraded the PSU to the 650w. My question is whether the motherboard is still OK? Is it PCIe4? If not will it throttle the gpu?

The 6600 is a very solid choice 👌

The motherboard is perfectly fine for that CPU. It is PCIe 4.0 but the CPU isn't, you'd need an 11400F for 4.0.

In terms of wattage, the GPU won't be throttled by the motherboard, it only ever sends 75W through the PCIe connector, the rest comes from PCIe cables. There is an agrument that it might be held back as you've got a PCIe 4.0 GPU and 3.0 CPU, but at time of writing, there's not a huge loss from running a 4.0 GPU on 3.0. I hope that makes some sort of sense 😂

If you're considering any other upgrades, it'd be great to see the build as it stands and what your new budget is (y)

The cynic in me wonders if PCS deliberately delay building the PCs to encourage extra spending.
Between placing my order and now I have added 50% to the price because I cant stop tinkering.
This is officially now my gaming PC as well as my daughters.
In all seriousness I added the 6600 as I tried playing a game in 1080p on my screen and it looked terrible so wanted to make sure it would play as many games as possible at 1440p.
Then I started looking at the 12 series CPU and it seems to be a big performance boost over the 10th.
Other changes were the motherboard and cooling as neither the originals were available with the new build and I upped the PSU (mostly because the price difference was so small).
The only thing I intend to change in the next few years is to add another SSD if I find it runs out of storage.
If you see me making any other upgrades please shoot me!
