I wonder if this will end up being Zen 5 or Zen 4+ in the way Ryzen 2000 was. Zen 4 but with the memory issues etc ironed out would be amazing...

8000 was quoted as Zen5 by AMD previously, so suggests new architecture.

It seems soon though as 2024 was the previous year mentioned, so this may have changed.

This is quite interesting, worth a watch, I know LTT have created a scripted benchmark analysis for their new labs setup but it's not clear if they're using it for this test.

I don't take much stock in their results as seems to go against every other reviewer but id like to know why their scores are so different.

What are other people's takes?

I watched this earlier. Was really interesting to see the differences.

I seen this. Pretty sure they've made a hash of it to be honest. It's most likely AMDs fault though as from what I'm seeing it's quite convoluted to get the most out of the multi CCD X3D chips. I'm hoping the 7800X3D will be smoother.

That's the important context that Linus puts across really well at 5:40, you're not buying the CPU and platform based on today's performance, but how it's going to perform in 5 years or so.

I was set on the 5900x but I'm seriously considering stepping down the the 7800x now, it's still got more than I need. Does look rather impressive especially at the price point. And makes an AM5 X670E board that much more obtainable.

I don't think the 7900X would make sense anyway to be honest. The 7900 makes far more sense. It depends where the priorities lie though, if it's gaming the 7800X3D is a no brainer, but the next step would be the 7950X3D as the 7900X3D makes zero sense with its awkward core count.

I think I would have the 7900 over the 7700X though.

I really liked the bit from Gamers Nexus where they went over the CPU temperature. They underlined all my gripes about temperature testing and completely acknowledged that this is just a like for like comparison, and not indicative of performance or use case. I've been crying out for them to do that for years now, it sends people down the wrong path of consideration without understanding the limitations of the tests they are viewing.

Sorry, I meant the x3D variants for me, gonna go for the 7800x3D I think, the efficiency and still being hugely powerful is an all out win for my requirements. The Plex server really doesn't require too much CPU at 1080p transcodes, but it will massively gain for gaming and would be fantastic value.

@Scott are you picking one of these up?

Can't you set Plex to transcode on the GPU anyway?

This might be a silly question, forgive me I'm new. I was planning on ordering a system today with a 7700X cpu. This 7800X3D looks like a good option though, if anyone knows, will PC specialist be offering them anytime close to release date? I'll wait if it's worth it.
