I like, whats with the XP though? 6GB ram is fine, just an odd number for a dual channel system

The XP is for my little nephew and his games, read that there's probs with windows7 and older games, gonna fill up 2nd drive for him,c+c,lotr, settlers etc
Going to be used for general pc stuff and gameing(not extreme),online, modern warfare sort of stuff.
Not being a pc person went for 6GB RAM cos it just seemed about right,i don't need an "exteme" machine, but can go for 8GB

For what you described, 4GB should be just fine. I've not heard that about windows 7, but I'll look into it when I have time, unless other people can confirm or add to that.
Hell I've played some pretty serious games (Crysis, GRID etc.) with only 2GB on Vista and it worked fine.
I don't understand the point in two Optical Drives either. And a GTX 460 is a great GPU, very capable with the games you mentioned.

I would honestly say you would be ok to run older games on Windows 7. Every game I have ever wanted to play has worked fine, some being upto 10 years old. However, Gorman will be able to let you know for sure.

The rest of the specification looks great and as LDUK says, the GTX460 is looking like an absolute bargain at the moment, it'll run everything you throw at it.

I am yet to come across a game i couldnt get working in 7 or Vista. And i like my original Fallout (1997).

I agree with the above. Windows 7 seems to be fine, even for old games. From my research, it's not all Windows 7 PC's it happens to, not that there are many people it has happened to. So I don't think the issue is Windows 7 itself, people just seem to be running windows 7 when they have the problem. Thing is this rumor happened when Vista was new too. I had no problems playing old games on that either.

XP mode being a VM doesnt do DX so it wont play most games. The issues with Vista / 7 generally come down to UAC and permissions on program files folders etc. There is always a workaround.

I have loads of "old" games I would love to play at their full potential. this pile of junk I am using right now is knocking on for 10 years old, and has less than 512mb of usable ram, integrated GPU and no bells or whistles at all. even games that are over 5 years old could not play at full whack.

that's why I am going for a real top end gaming pc myself, so I can let whatever game I buy run wild and free.

I was wondering about W7 compatibility issues as well for that reason. the first games I plan on installing are some of my older classics, just to see the difference a proper gaming system can make.

If UAC's the case, then that's as simple as a lemon to just switch off. I never have UAC on, it stops me from playing games and doing other things like that! All UAC does it ask you if you want to do things, like "are you sure you want to do this?" F*** off, obviously I do otherwise I wouldn't have done it. Other time it just disallows you completely from doing things. Like installing games and what not. Grrr, it angers me lol.
