Need to tweak spec

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the correct place!

I've obtained a quote that almost matches my needs but I need to modify it in the following ways:

1. I need 2 extra bays for 2 more hard drives I will be transferring over from my existing PC

2. I need 8x USB 3.0 ports

3. I have no idea if the £39 case I selected will be OK for the above

Are PCS likely to be able to accommodate the above?

Clicking on the picture of the case you’ve chosen will bring up details including how many bays there are for drives and how many USB inputs it has. How many other USB ports there are is dictated by the choice of motherboard. Either way, I wouldn’t be buying a £39 case as you really do get what you pay for...

If you post your proposed full system specs, details on your uses for it, a budget and what monitor you’d be using, we can potentially offer assistance 🙂👍

Many thanks Agent Cooper, I didn't see an option to order a case for more than £39 (it was the most expensive of the 4 displayed), else I'd have done just that.

I've attached the quote.

My needs are essentially these:

Working with very large Excel files containing VBA

Internet browsing with loads of open Chrome windows

Almost constant, very large Bittorrent downloads (audio and movies, all above board)

Burning DVDs (will I need to advise that I will be transferring my existing burner over?)

I have a couple of 4tb internal hard drives that I want to swap over to the new PC and 2x 4 bay external USB 3 hard drive docking stations, each containing 3x 4tb HDD (both have their own power supply). I also have 2 external WD 14tb HDDs that use USB 3.

Streaming online videos from YouTube etc

I play the occasional old game - I haven't bought a game in over 10 years (I use my PlayStation for that).

No monitor required, I have a 42 inch LG.

Budget not an issue but I don't want overkill!

Many thanks again!

One other point - my present system has lasted 8 years and I'm looking at a similar period for this one, so a good element of future-proofing is needed.

The guys on here normally spec the base build to last 7-10 years with maybe a couple of GPU updates in that time

Made a few tweeks just to improve the performance and make sure it gets a longer lifespan.

Upped to the 5600x/B550 - Fantastic CPU/combo will see you through the best part of a decade.

Changed the ram to 2x8GB sticks and upped the speed as Ryzen CPUs prefer the speed to make the most of them

Your GPU will be fine at outputting at 4K. However would struggle at gaming in those resolution. Based off your needs it shouldn't matter too much but just bare in mind. (to game at 4K you'd need to spend around 2k as a min)

Selected a more reliable PSU which will give you some headroom in the future if you did want to put a more powerful GPU in.

Upgraded wifi - For £11 more you get better wifi and Bluetooth.

Assuming you have a windows licence already?

---

I would probably still recommend a stronger GPU than the 1050t if you're willing to wait.
As most are out of stock at the moment

Many thanks Resistance!

No issues with your CPU/PSU suggestions - the graphics card will be fine for what I need it to do.

I only need 1 SSD (for the operating system) - my data will be stored to one of the 2 HDDs I will be transferring across from my existing PC. I trust the tower will accommodate the 2 drives as well but what about the spare SATA cables - will it come with these or do I need to request these?

Thanks for adding the peripherals but I already have a separate external USB-powered WiFi antenna as I need a strong signal and I also have a small Bluetooth adapter (apologies for overlooking these).

What do I do about my requirement for 8x USB 3 ports?

I already have a Windows 7 disk so I thought I'd just install and upgrade again with the new PC?

PS when I amended the quote I kept the wireless / BT as it's so cheap. But I noted the system message that 650W PSU seems overkill rather than 450W. What made you recommend that size supply?

No worries

They were on the config link already so left them there. Feel free to change them :)

For the 8x USB 3.0 ports would it be worth buying an external adapter for them? I'm not 100% sure on configuring them maybe @MrWilson or @AgentCooper could help?

I know that motherboard can support 8 of them

With the PSU its there to support any future additions or upgrade you may make. Not to mention that they run better, are quieter and last longer when not near full power.

Thanks again Resistance, you've been really helpful and that's a good point re the PSU, happy to go with that.

I actually already have an external self-powered USB hub but it's not powerful enough to run external hard drives, that's why I want the maximum number of slots on the PC.

You can always put a USB card in rather than plugging an external hub in

PS I missed your point re a better GPU. How would that work - would I have to suspend the entire order and check daily for the 1650 (or equivalent) to become available?

You can amend the order at any point up until it goes into build without impacting your place in the queue :)
