The Last Of Us on PC!!!

With everything going for it after the success of the TV show. They will have put a lot of people off IMO.
I'm hoping that Naughty Dog do the patches instead of contracting it out like they did the main port. ND certainly can fix it, so I'm happy to wait. But yeah, a lot of people will have been put off by the state it is in now.

That what surprises me, Naughty should have reviewed it before release, they're so capable, I'm surprised they allowed this to be released in this state.

Yeah decided I'll skip this, I'm only allowing myself to buy one game this year and try to work through my gigantic backlog. Diablo 4 is going to be that game for me. I'll pick up Last of Us when it's cheap, I've already waited this long for it to show up I can wait until it works properly

Similar here. Mines going to be Starfield.

I was looking forward to this as I always heard that the story was amazing, even if the gameplay was a little meh...shame that another developer has made such a mess of things. I'd been looking for a new game to play given the games I want to play (Forza Motorsport, TDU:Solar Crown, Starfield) all keep getting put back
If you're looking for games to play while waitng for some of the delayed heavy hitters, I've got a few spare Steam keys that I'm giving away in the forum's best kept secret - so many of the site's visitors don't even realise there's a Gaming part of the forum. A few of us have been giving away spare Steam keys for a couple of years now, mostly from Humble Bundle, and my list just keeps growing. There's no obligation to do anything other than let me know what games you want in the thread and I'll send them over when I'm next free.

The thread can be found at https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/the-big-fat-giveaway-of-the-year-2023.91558/

This is a really good video, I think. The takeaways:
  • The online hype is overblown and the situation is not as bad as many are making out.
  • If your performance isn't great, go down to a lower quality setting.
  • Cards with 8GB or less of VRAM have a somewhat limited lifespan at this point. Where this game has gone, others will too. Of the last gen products, this makes e.g. the 6700 XT family a far better proposition than the 3070 family at this point. I doubt I'll be recommending them for many builds in the future. I'm quite curious about what the new mid-range cards will offer when they come out...

I think the 4070 has to have 12GB or it's DOA. The 4060 ti and vanilla are both likely to have only 8GB and therefore will be very difficult to recommend either.

Thank you. I was aware of that thread but nothing stands out..problem I have is I am very fussy when it comes to games and I can often struggle to get into them. Most of the time I play Forza, Halo or Mass Effect. I mean, there is also the side of it that I cannot play games at less than 4k due to my becoming used to it from my Series X so some games simply will be too much for my PC (until I decide that I can justify spending several thousand to get a 4k 120 capable PC of course!)..having said that, Horizon Zero Dawn runs at glorious 4k 120 without issue so most would likely be okay.
No worries. It might be worth putting a message in that thread anyway - there's a new batch of games the first Tuesday of every month and April's games may have something more to your liking.

Funny you should mention Horizon Zero Dawn, as that's the only other Playstation game that shipped in a really rough state. The devs worked on it for a while and patched all the issues out of the PC port, and as you say, now it runs like a dream even in 4k!

Decided to give the game a go and this video was a big help. With a 3080, I've got 2Gb of VRAM that Windows is holding onto for dear life, giving me 8Gb to actually go towards the game. It was trying to do 4k Ultra, but that wants more than 10Gb on its own, so using the video as a guide, I think I'm going to drop to 1440 High settings until the issues are sorted. About an hour played so far, and it feels pretty good with no crashes yet. It's nowhere near as bad as the reviews were saying, but that's probably because I'm prepared to drop settings (or even resolutions) before crashes due to running out of VRAM, etc happen!

Why is Windows grabbing 2Gb VRAM? That's not right?

Your guess is as good as mine, but it certainly seems to be doing it!

I haven't had Chrome installed for quite a while. I do have Firefox open, but I don't think it's in the same league as Chrome.
If you wanted to determine what it is if you open task manager into resource manager you should be able to sort by GPU usage.

My concern would be that there's some kind of cryptominer working in the background. I'm overly paranoid about that sort of thing, but I've genuinely never known windows to need more than about 512mb VRAM, that how it can run smoothly off embedded graphics.

Task Manager
Details tab
Right click on the header row (Name/PID/Status etc)
Select columns
Tick Dedicated GPU memory and hit OK
Sort by the Dedicated GPU memory column and you should be able to see what apps are using VRAM
