Packaging - very solid

I ordered without operating system as I had my own OS licenses to use, I also wanted to dual-boot with linux.
If you are in the same category as me - heads up - *format the HD* before installing your own version! ...
reason = W8 gets confused between licenses (PC-Specialist pre-installed a trial version of W8 which I didnt want).

Once I got the machine setup, I installed the drivers that came on the accompanying CD - all fine so far.

Problems:

* The screen (Full HD) is quite amazing - superb to have the extra desktop space to work with (I write software most of the day),
however, whatever way the screen was fitted, there is a quite noticeable bleed / halo at both the top right and top left of the screen,
but *only* when the screen is dark. I would normally send something like this back, but, my old machine died and I simply cannot
afford to be without the machine for the time it would take to send back, get looked at and returned. Also, I have noticed a similar
complaint from other about laptop screens here so it seems perhaps to be a thing.... as I am not using it for its black screen the
fault is not causing me concern so I will put up with it.

* there is a slight gap/pinch at the top right side of the screen enclosure ... suspect this has something to do with bad fitting of the screen
itself - again, not going to return it for inspection for the reason above.

* Case - the edge of the case at the wrist had been reported by others as being "sharp" - and it is ... the issue is not noticeable of course
when wearing long sleeves, but when wearing a t-shirt I find myself avoiding the edge of the laptop case due to the sharpness.

* Microphone - not the greatest ... perhaps its a driver issue, not sure, have requested a link from the company for updated W8 mic drivers.
The issue is that the pickup volume is *extremely* low ... almost to the point of inaudible ... when I look at the settings in W8 it shows that
its turned up full but when testing the blue bar only barely registers .... for investigation....

Good points:

* Speed - I purchased one of those hybrid hard-drives ... its a 7.5k rpm so faster than normal drives but also supposedly has this caching
that speeds up frequently used data/applications. In practice it seems to work, and the machine is well suited to my needs. Down the road
I might consider putting in an mSata SSD and move the OS and apps to there to speed it up even more.

* Battery life - seems good so far - not measured fully yet as I use the machine under different load types (dev, virtual machines, etc)

* Overall neatness factor - very tidy - I especially like the power-pack - really small and neat and as a bonus, it has a very long cable
so will stretch quite far.

* Strength - quite a solid machine, no obvious flexing anywhere

* Feel (subjective!) ... most of the time its fine, sometimes , esp when I am working very fast there is an almost echo/hollow feel from
the case - I suspect this is because its a generic case and has room to spare unlike some branded machines that are precision engineered
with custom parts etc..

* Mouse - very good - responds well - only slight issue I am having is with the windows 8 gesture mapping - have to find a way of turning
some of the more annoying ones off!

* Sound - headphone output good, on-board speakers very tinny - would benefit greatly from plugging in a woofer I suspect!

* Keyboard - the keys are a wee bit wider than my prev machine (sony viao 11") but after a few hours of getting used to them they are
good - nice feel, not to much travel, and the addition of the number pad is interesting.

* Screen hinge - nice and firm, no sloppiness in opening or closing

* Overall finish - plastic, but with a brushed alum kind of look to it - time will tell how the finish lasts.

* Ports - only tried so far with single screen output (display extended) - will try to get two external monitors working at some stage and report back.

Summary - overall very impressed, would purchase again - and for the price, excellent excellent value, far exceeds what I could have
got for the same price retail or branded, and the few bad points / niggles fade away overall. I'll be back to PC-Specialist for my next machine
and heavily recommending them on!

Hi,

battery - depending on what I am doing (using cd, wifi turned on, screen brightness turned down, background services trimmed), I can get
on average up to about 3 hrs (everything full on), and touch near 4.5 last week when I had everything trimmed and was light on usage
(a session of pure writing versus coding / trashing the HD etc).

hope this helps.

just a quick question regarding the battery itself as well..... if i were to have an i3 processor..... will it have more battery life compared to having an i7 like yours? (if that made sense).... as i would just only use it for internet browsing.

and..... will the `bleeding` you mentioned in the screen have a bad effect when watching movies/videos?

thanks. =)

Hi,

I have a powerful but not overly processor - multiple cores - very useful for my particular needs.
I don't think there would be much difference in power consumption.

Regarding the screen bleed - I believe that if you are watching a lot of movies, on full screen (HD),
and they have frequent blacks (as movies do), then yes you will have an issue. However! ... I could quite
easily send the unit back to PCSpecialist for fixing - I choose not to as on a daily basis this issue does not
bother me.

hth!

You may notice a higher power drain with the i7, but it will be marginally noticable when on the web, as all CPU's run at lower speeds when not under load :)

Ps, i have no bleeding on mine that im aware of ;)

I haven't noticed any backlight bleed on mine either, chances are you won't have the issue. The thing is, a lot of people don't tend to write reviews unless they have an issue (a bit off topic but look at crystal ski as an example, I like however many thousands of people used them this ski season with no issues and had a great trip, but they are only rated 2 stars on trip advisor)

Hi, Thanks for the review; saves me writing one. See the above points I agree with.

I installed an mSata SSD and 16 GB RAM I purchased somewhere else because of price/availability.
Works great.

Slackware linux installation was done after booting via PXE and a cross-over cable from my old computer and then from an external hard-drive.
(Formatting was needed to get linux partions and to remove a trial version of W8 which was installed by PC-Specialist for testing purposes).

The screen is great. That I lived for 4 years with a glare screen I cannot believe; this is so much easier and the HD-resolution is awesome.
In my case some bleed is visible at both the top and bottom left of the screen, but only really obvious during boot-up; and no longer after running X-windows even when a dark background has been set. My major worry was that I would not be able to work on the train due to the larger size (I moved 'up' from a 14" laptop). But this is fine; the screen is relatively less 'high', which works out fine in between seats and the comp doesn't stick out into the neighbour's seat or aisle.

On-board speakers are better than what I had so I cannot fault the computer for that.

This is a great computer and very handy for linux users who do not want to get bogged down with uefi/secure boot or the graphics-nonsense related to nvidia optimus-chips. They can just install what they want and keep control of their own hardware. Thanks PC Specialist for adding this model to your line-up.

thank you guys for all the input about this laptop....
definitely close in buying one.... will just figure which configuration will best suit my needs.

The quoted 7 hours is WAY off. Im only getting around 3 hours on mine with brightness down fully and no sounds etc. Still have wifi on however. I expected it to be at least 5 hours :/ Also, the keyboard is VERY noisy when typed on (thinking this is probably a fault of manufacturing) as well as some light bleed on the top left of the screen. Overall it's a fantastically fast and powerful machine, but im a bit upset about these problems considering i only took receipt of the system today!

It may be that the 15" version is running on a different battery or something, or that the bigger screen causes a big power draw, but with my 13" i do get about 5 hours on browsing and documents, longer obviously when it's just idling.

I'm not trying to argue, just giving my side of the coin :)

My previous laptop lasted twenty min without battery, all due to a graphics card draining power as if it was just made for that (power management by the open source linux driver is absent and the proprietary driver did not install) which gave me just enough time to find my power supply or put the plug more tightly into the socket at the back. Now, I travel again without adapter (leaving one at home and the other at work) and get far more time than I ever experienced. So, nice....; yip, 3 hours does not seem bad at all to me..... BTW 7 hours is the max according to the suppliers website :
Battery life: 300 minutes (with 48.84WH battery)
Battery life: 420 minutes (with 62.16WH battery)
Thus, that is probably under idle conditions and typically sales-encouraging, over-optimistic info.

Your keyboard noise complaint is intriguing. What sound are you referring to? Something like you get on a mobile phone (and can inactivate)? On my linux-box, the only typing sound I hear is directly related to the vigour with which I push down the keys. I learned to type on manual typewriters and had to prepare sheets for stencilling (which meant hammering letter-shaped holes into a double-layer-sheet; yes some of us are that old) giving sore finger tips after finishing a piece of 'writing'... I mean, I hardly notice a specific keyboard sound on my Ultranote.

I hope you will enjoy your machine as I do mine at the moment (after about three weeks usage).

just wanted to ask another question....

when I first bought my netbook, someone installed a windows ultimate or something and ms office.... Will i be able to move the OS and ms office from the netbook? or I have to get new ones specifically for the ultra note?

also, thanks for the info about the battery life.... it really is a big concern for me.

You can install a retail version of windows on any one computer at a time,as long as you have the OS disk and product key.
Installing MS office could be much the same, depending on the license agreement.

The keyboard sound i was referring to was a very odd one. I say that because its not a sound from software, but a sound from the chassis itself. Its almost like when you tap a key (you dont even have to press it down), you can hear the chassis being "tapped". None of the keys are directly touching the chassis however, and it only happens from time to time. Pretty weird. Its a fantastic machine though and im very pleased with it! :D
