I prefer PCs everytime for the quality of graphics, and the versatility, and mainly because if the extra categories brands of games you dont see often on consoles (mmorpgs/strategy etc). I just feel more free on a PC.

I don't think it will be worth it for you if you just plan on playing the same games but with better graphics/smoothness, as it's a pretty hefty price to pay. If you have quite a few games you want to give a go on the PC that you can't on your existing console, then go for it. It will be nice to play the latest games on a PC when compared with a PS3 imo. I think this is really down to your personal choice though, and I think the best advice I can offer is to make a list of the games that you would actually want to play on your new PC system (if you went ahead with the purchase), and see if you personally think it is a substantial enough "change of scene" as you put it, to warrant your spend.

Note: There are plenty of other benefits a PC has over a console too which I haven't gone into (in terms of programs/software/downloading/work/socialising etc), but I haven't mentioned this, as you can still get this all with a £300.00 system, keeping your gaming to your PS3. Consoles will always have affordability and less-complications in their favour, but the best things in life are more often those things that you put more work into! ;)

okay, well basically i am fed up of the performance of new releases, i was extremely dissapointed when bf3 released because of the lack of frames and multiplayer player count. if i were to get the pc i would want to play bfbc2 and bf3 at high fps, but also old games such as cod waw for the modding support. i am interested in upcoming open world releases such as far cry 3 and borderlands 2. i did some calculations earlier which shocked me, i have supposedly paid £3000+ on ps3 alone.

£3000 on PS3? how did you come up with that figure?

Regarding your query, I prefer to play on PC rather than console. Tried a couple of games on PS3 such as Resident Evil 5 and Battlefield and the image quality is superior, I also have the choice of playing 3D which is good fun. When tested 3D on my PS3 I was pretty disappointed.

I also have a PS3 and I agree that it's starting to feel limited. Just compare vids of BF3 or Arkham City on PC and PS3 and you'll see the difference. BF3 has outstanding graphics, bigger maps, more vehicles and more than twice the number of players than what consoles can handle. Fact of the matter is the PS3 was released 6 years ago so you (we) are gaming on a very outdated system in tech years. So PC>>>PS3 atm.

However, the PS4 is likely to come out in 2013-2014 and should offer a big leap in graphics and processing power. There are rumors that it will be using an AMD chip which will essentially make it a mid-range gaming PC. In this case if you're buying a mid-range PC now it may perform similarly to the PS4 in a couple of years but you can't be sure cuz we don't know anything about the next gen consoles yet. Your only reference point would be the Wii U.

Now if you get a PC with a good CPU such as what was recommended and a GTX 680 it will perform better than the PS4 cuz they can't afford to put this kind of hardware in a console without increasing the prices well above £500, which means no one would buy it.

The last thing to consider is that a PC game will only be as good as the PC port. Most games that you play on console atm are designed for consoles and ported to PC (BF3 being one exception) and I have seen a lot of people complaining about the controls not being optimized for PC. Check out this article: clicky. However you could always pair your ps3 controller to your PC via bluetooth; that's what I'm planning to do when I get my PC for most games except shooters.

It looks like developers are starting to acknowledge the PC community better though, so it all comes down to what your friends are playing and if you are willing to spend £1k for smoother gameplay and better graphics. Ideally as there is a lot you can do on a PC besides gaming you could consider that as an investment if your current PC is getting old.
Also take note that games are a lot cheaper on PC, I read your post on spending £3000 on your PS3 and I'm at around £2k. Sites like Steam offer great games at a bargain and (I'm not saying you should) games can always be downloaded via torrents if you want to try them out before buying.

Yep but I'm going to buy it at the end of the year so for now I'm just looking at the forums and looking at the tech that is available right now and coming out soon so that I have a good idea of what I need when I actually make that purchase.

I'm also new to the PC gaming world I've only ever had a VAIO laptop but when I look at the direction the game industry is taking (online passes, day-one DLC...) it's less and less attractive to be a console gamer. Plus games are more expensive.
Check out this article on IGN clicky it's by no means official but it suggests that the ps4 will not support backwards compatibility nor used games, which means no more trading or lending your games to your friend. Similar rumors are circulating about the Xbox 720 and if that's really the case I don't think I'll be getting the PS4, which is a shame cuz I've had a PS since I was 10y old (I'm 21).

My opinion regarding self-building is that if you want to learn do it with cheap components but if you wish to build a high end computer then a specialised retailer like PCS is the best way to go. If you get any issues with any components I am pretty sure it will take ages to get an RMA issue and components replaced. The extended warranty is also a good value for money considering the service offered.
